A married mother of two was fired from her job as the kitchen manager at an elementary school in Colorado for giving lunches to students who didnt have money, CBS Denver reports.
Della Curry was the manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School near Aurora. She told CBS Denver that she would see students who often times werent signed up for free lunch programs crying because of hunger and no lunch money.
I had a first grader in front of me, crying because she doesnt have enough money for lunch, Curry told CBS. Yes, I gave her lunch.
Typically, students who dont have lunch and dont qualify for free or reduced lunch receive one slice of cheese on a hamburger bun, and a small milk. Believing that meal not sufficient, Curry often bought the students lunch with money from her own pocket, she said.
To qualify for free lunch, a family of four needs to have an income of around $31,000. Curry said many students she helped did not qualify for that program. Parents stepped up in Currys defense, saying she often helped when students forgot their lunch money.
The school district claims it followed policy in firing her. Anyone who has ever been terminated like Curry directly violated policy, the district said.
The kitchen manager paid out of her own pocket. For that she should be fired?
Yes. In Chicago and elsewhere, everything from sack lunches to snacks are banned:

Such is the stuff of small-town living or living back when things were more “normal” than today. The three years of Junior High were the only time I was in a school building with a cafeteria. I was fortunate that most of the lunch ladies were either in Eastern Star or church with my grandmother so I was usually the beneficiary of an extra hot roll that was so good.
I still don’t see why there is such a policy, but a cheese sandwich (plus milk for 5 cents) WAS the very lunch I brought from home, for years in elementary school. I thought the story was about kids going totally hungry, but that isn’t the case.
Did anybody Snopes it
Perhaps with the slop they serve kids it was probably the safest thing to do. BOTOH, shouldn’t the kids be told what their balance is like a receipt or something?
When I was a kid, if my parents didn’t give me lunch I beat up some wimp and took hers. ;)
If there’s receipts given out or balance notices that are sent home with the kid and the kid doesn’t hand it over how’s the parent to know? Maybe robo phone messages?
And why are there hungry kids when there are so many government programs-—food stamps, WIC, etc.? I thought that’s what those programs were for.
I know I feel safer now.
I heard a weepy radio commercial yesterday that urged parents to take advantage of free lunches, plus more, for kids during the summer.
So the only way to fight this sort of thing is to disparage it. People who wont take of their kids send their kids to school to eat. Lazy people sent their kids to school to eat.....and on and on.
Or people (women) who mysteriously find the money to have their two inch long talons manicured, polished green, and adorned with stick-on rhinestones.
If she would have had sex with the kids she would be on paid leave.
Wait. That’s only for teachers. Never mind.
If you google “school confiscates packed lunch” you’ll see the latest reports.
