My dental health is something I have always taken seriously — and as a gadget fan, I’ve spent hundreds of pounds on the latest high-tech electronic toothbrushes and expensive toothpastes, gels and mouthwashes.

But then I had to go without brushing my teeth for a fortnight.

This was for a new two-part series on dental health for the BBC, and what we discovered was truly eye-opening, with implications not just for me, but for all of us.

My wife was anything but keen on the no-brushing experiment and there was a lot less kissing during that fortnight. And she was right to be worried about the outcome.

For two weeks, I wore a gum guard on one side of my mouth whenever I brushed my teeth, so that side didn’t get cleaned.

At the end of this time, I brushed my teeth without the gum guard on and my gums bled a bit and there was pink, blood- spattered spit in the bathroom washbowl. I had developed mild gum disease. Carry on like this and not treat the problem and I could theoretically lose some teeth.

“Do you have a dilution for bigger volumes, because I want to fill up my waterpik at the correct concentration”

Here’s an idea: Get a measuring spoon that is a bit less than 1/20th of the volume you need, then put 20 in the waterpik. Note the level by scratching a mark with a razor. After that, just fill the water to that mark, and add one of the measuring spoons of bleach. Stir to taste.

Thank you so much. Do you have a dilution for bigger volumes, because I want to fill up my waterpik at the correct concentration, and if I do it cap by cap, it’s going to take a long time!

It's 5% of the straight out of the bottle Clorox 95% water.

Looked at my Generic bleach and its 6.0%.
Local stores all carry only Clorox Concentrated @ 8%.
Looks like Clorox don’t sell 5point any more.
No scientist here so not sure what to do with the 6% or 8% any input would help as it all sounds quite reasonable.

Lots of bridge work here and root canals etc...How about this mixture in my water pic..Dentist sez its not as good as flossing and a brush but it sounds like it may be good to blast the 20:1 way down in??

It's not a replacement for brushing, but it is better than flossing for getting down into the gums. Flossing cannot reach where a high pressure jet of water can reach. You do need to get the Clorox mix down where the bacteria is doing nasty things and kill them.

I am curious, since infants on WIC are commonly given formula with iron in it , and the mothers given prenatal supplements with iron as well, at least in this area.

In people we know who received such, the infants could not keep the formula down, nor did the mothers react well to the supplements, so they were not used.

If, however, this is common practice by welfare offices as part of prenatal/welfare services, might that extra iron be affecting the indigent population and helping continue the cycle (along with a host of social factors as well).

These aren't people who do not prize employment, and often are employed at least part time, just in jobs that do not pay well, for whatever reason (usually qualification level). However, ensuring their children are lower on the bell curve would only exacerbate the situation.

No, don't swallow, you can spit. . . but neither the baking soda nor the Clorox solution will hurt you if you swallow some. Baking soda is used to settle acidic stomachs and the Clorox solution turns to salt water naturally in just a few minutes and instantly when it encounters your stomach acids.

You won't find it. All over-the-counter Clorox is essentially 7-8% dilution NaClO in H2O. You will take that 8% solution and FURTHER dilute it by 20 parts H2O to 1 part 8% NaClO, resulting in ~0.4% NaClO solution. . . a very, very dilute solution of Clorox that is very unstable.

I looked at your list of articles. . . and then had three doctors and my girlfriend who is a registered nurse with specialty in the past in nutrition look at your list of cut and pasted Googled articles and they all came to the same conclusions that I did.

Did you ever read any of them? Or are you just listing them because they mention Iron and perhaps chelation? I sampled some of them, and it's obvious they are not about what you claim they are about.

These articles ALL have to do with Iron or Chelation in reference to PATHOLOGY of existing disease and how iron chelation, or the use of iron in the treatment by a drug therapy, of an existing DISEASE which was generally not in any way associated or caused by diet!

None of the diseases in these articles was in any way caused by an excess amount of iron. Some referenced injuries treatments. In fact, most of the articles had to do with how iron might have an effect on treating the disease, either by removal or by adding iron. Sometimes chelation was proper because of INJURY where blood had been released from its intended channels, such as in hemorrhages. Or how damaged cells of sickle cell disease or in Cancer patients might be affected by Chelation. These are all pathological studies and have NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH DIETARY IRON! ZIP! NOTHING.

This is what you get when you have people who have no idea what they are talking about pushing QUACK ideas to the ignorant public. . . Listing real scientific studies and confabulating these studies to claim they back the quackery is wrong. . . and reprehensible. Just because they happen to mention the terms the quacks choose to use, does not mean they back your position. They simply do not, by any stretch of someone's warped imagination.

We've seen it in the silver craze where people starting turning blue because they were told they needed silver in their diets, and they started taking thousands of milligrams of silver in every form they could get their hands on. We saw it in the Mercury amalgam idiocy . . . where people had perfectly good amalgam fillings removed because idiots told them they were leaching mercury into their systems from the fillings, yet the mechanical grinding of the amalgam removal resulted in their receiving far more mercury than leaving them in situ ever would. First Coffee is bad, then good, then bad, now they say five cups a day is best. Environmentally, we saw it in fear causing perfectly safe forms of asbestos being mechanically removed and reduced to dangerous aerosol dust by that removal because of irrationality. BAH!

As I told you before, when I see someone making a completely absurd claim that "The fossil record indicates humans began shrinking their brains 30k years ago" and you connect that to iron in the diet, I know that a snow job is being perpetrated. . . because I know there is no such "brain" record, anywhere. (I am pretty sure what you are hinting at, but it is unrelated to iron in the cellular structure that anyone can show or even postulate!) That means that everything else that follows is of the same level of accuracy and causality. . . and believability.

You sealed it with this list of articles.

That means it starts out cheaper quality that Clorox and will not last as long.

If you really want to keep using it, you need to use a 15 to 1 mix of water to your generic bleach to get the same strength of Dakin's Solution.

So, use one cap of generic bleach to 15 caps of water.

That gets the same strength of Dakin's Solution as 1 cap of Clorox to 20 caps of water. Clorox is that much stronger NaClO.

Joe, you are assuming that Kruss3's iron thesis is correct. It isn't. I can find no credible evidence to back it up. . . and what he has posted as "scientific articles" on the subject simply are not addressing that claim, and certainly are not coming to that conclusion.

Okay, but I would like to see the info. I just know most of those children, or their mothers while the kids were in utero were sick (as in vomiting, indigestion) when they tried to take the iron fortified supplements of formula.

Off that, they did fine.
