"The Star" a fairly recent Russian movie about a Russian Special Operations unit crossing/recrossing German lines to collect intelligence ahead of Operation Bagration. Need to turn CC on to get English captioning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcGC2JDh-pc
Chistilishche
"Purgatory" - A 3 part Russian movie with English subtitles about the Battle of Grozny during the Chechen War. The women snipers were rumored to be mercenary Olympic biathletes from one of the Baltic States. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ2XZ8W2t-o

Long movie with English subtitles about the winter war of 1939-1940 between Finland and the USSR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWEt20DwcmQGerman Movies

I thought the landing scenes were horrible. How does anyone get off a landing craft 100 meters directly in front of and 15 degrees below an MG-42 in a pillbox?
The Green Berets
Red Dawn
Not entirely. John Milius wrote the first draft of “Apocalypse Now” and consulted with Coppola on later drafts.
I remember too! It's also the earliest version of the "found footage" genre that I can remember.
I’m with you on Apocalypse Now. When I watch it I’m fully aware that it’s a leftist creation but dang it’s a great movie with some great scenes.
I was so disappointed with that movie. They managed to cram every bad war movie cliche into a 10-man crew; they should have named the movie "'Tards on a Plane." I don't know how that crew survived their first mission, much less 25. And I'm not sure who is the worst actor on the planet: Matthew Modine or Keanu Reeves. I loved the B-17 though.
Not a war movie per se but Children of Men has an amazing single shot (as in filmed in a continuous take with one camera and no edits) urban battle scene.
Thanks.
Sort of figured the housing ‘situation’ was a little overblown...Maybe the Capts and above in those plush homes (and Senior NCOs) but not the general troops...then again not a whole lot of married people in the ranks below E5.
In 1963 you still needed permission to get married if below E5(at least Navy -)
Believe the ‘word of the day’ was “If your Unka Shuga wanted you to have a wife, she would have been issued in your Sea Bag” - or fewer words to that effect.
Also seem to recall an area a little South of Quantico (off Rt 1) that I ‘stumbled’ upon that had a bunch of housing like you described ... looked like what would have been called “Dogpatch(at the time)” and I was told it was housing for the Quantico Staff (EM) Personnel. I never really ‘checked it out’ but it was sure disgusting.
Believe at the time it was abandoned and being torn down. Just checked and in the area of Boswells Corner there is an Unincorporated Community named Midway Island - not sure if a coincidence or not but it is in the General vicinity.
Understand Hollywood needs to ‘spice the action up’ BUT considering the trash that Hollywood passed off as TRUE Vietnam ‘experiences’, “We Were Soldiers” was a rarity.
All Quiet On The Western Front
FYI, “all quiet” was only one of
a two book series.
The second book, “The Road Back”
is an alternate in which the main
character survives the end of the
war and faces ptsd and all the
situations returning veterans have
to deal with.
Quite a story in itself, it’s too
bad it was never brought to the screen.
The Blue Max
Twelve O'clock High
Midway
Guadalcanal Diary
The Battle of Britain
We Were Soldiers
The Hurt Locker
Comedy: Kelly's Heroes
Sorry $$, I was not aware of that.
In my 17+ years here I had never heard of that honor. Definitely an oversight on my part.
Thank You Aloha Ronnie.
Definitely a “Some gave all but all gave some” moment.
Of course, one will never know what one does not know even if, deep in our hearts and minds, we think we ‘know’ everything......<: <: <:
Big Red One
Sands of Iwo Jima

One of my all time favorites. Myrna Loy was smoking hot.

How can you not love the smell of napalm in the morning!
One of my favorites as well...I found the inclusion of the Old German U-boat commander fascinating.
It was also good but I couldn't find a version with English subtitles on YouTube so, didn't include it.
There are so many things about that particular movie that I love.
The gruff old Sergeant back from fighting out in the Pacific, realizing that not only has he changed, but his wife and kids have changed as well. Back from fighting out in the Pacific, realizing that not only has he changed, but his wife and kids have changed as well. I really enjoyed the interplay between him (Fredric March) and his wife, Myrna Loy. Especially when he got drunk and she had to put him into bed. And the scene with him and the Air Force captain in the back of the cab was priceless!
And him and his wife trying to explain to their daughter that they do indeed understand what it is like to be in love.
Just a brilliant movie all around.
