Fighting soldiers from the sky Fearless men who jump and die Men who mean just what they say The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men we'll test today But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live, off nature's land Trained in combat, hand to hand Men who fight by night and day Courage deep, from the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men we'll test today But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits Her Green Beret has met his fate He has died for those oppressed Leaving her this last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest Make him one of America's best He'll be a man they'll test one day Have him win the Green Beret
My dad is still with us. But for all that have lost loved ones dying for our freedom, I hope and pray that my life promoting and fighting for American liberty can do justice to your sacrifice.
Great song, Barry Sandler had the perfect voice for it.
BTTT!
And, please hug and thank your dear Dad for his service, for me :)
When men were men.
These days, isn’t it the “Ballad of the Green Barette”?
I can’t get Bill Murrays version out of my head.
“Fearless men who jump and die” While I always liked the song, I never got that line. I’m all for the jumping part, but not so much the dying part. As a job description, it doesn’t seem like it would make for a compelling recruitment poster.
When I was in Army flight school & headed for Vietnam, our version went,
“Silver wings upon my chest,
“Fly my chopper above the rest.
“Cause I make more dough that way,
“And you can’t spend...no green beret.
Our class song was “Ruby, don’t take your love to town”, about a paralyzed veteran (”It wasn’t me who started that old crazy Asian war...”)
Good to hear SSG Barry Sadler’s original is still remembered.
I have the movie queued up for this evening. Can’t wait.
Sadler was the medic for my bunch on Swift Strike. He had just got out of medic course. Way before the song.
I can never get through this song. God bless him,
