There's probably a few threads already but I've been here 14 years and rarely post vanities. So indulge me.
I've got about $1600 +/-$200 to spend. I certainly don't need to spend it all.
I want a good semi-auto rifle.
What to get?
Currently, I have a Maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun. I have a .45 1911. I have some Smith and Wesson Glock copy in .40 cal that a buddy needed money for. I have a Ruger 10-22. I have a Winchester 30-30.
I'm missing something. A semi-auto rifle.
Lately, I've been a strong proponent of something in .308/7.62 NATO and leaning towards a DS Arms FAL or a PTR-91. However, nothing beats a Kalashnikov. And AR-15s are the most popular rifle in the world.
What say you all on this Saturday night?
SCAR 17 of course.
It feels like you are shooting an AR15 only louder.
I gotta go with you on that.
During the apocalypse you need something that won’t break, won’t jam, will shoot any crap ammo you can find. Something with minimal maintenance needs. That’s the AK.
A civilian with no military infrastructure to support him needs a rifle that requires almost nothing more than ammo.
At least 6 mags per rifle and several thousand rounds for each, above & beyond your practice needs.
You need not have an AR, but it might be smart to choose something that uses AR magazines (Kel-Tec, etc.). It makes sense, given what's out there.
An inexpensive .308 bolt-action with scope (Ruger American, etc) would be better for the heavier cartridge.
Quite.
I'm proficient at under 100 yards. Can pretty much hit whatever I'm pointing at with a rifle at that distance.
I disagree with the folks who believe I need to be sitting on thousands upon thousands of palletized rounds. When TSHTF, 5.56 and 7.62 NATO will be lying all over the place. There will be no shortage of ammo.
If you like .308, try an AR-10. You can find a decent one for about 1k.
I Like. Is that a semi auto 5.56 and a pump 12 gauge? tell me more.
308 is overkill for soft targets like that. A reliable piston AR will do fine. Light, fast, heavily customizable.
Fast zombies. The ones who will be looking for food when their EBT cards decline.
based on my research from watching zombie movies and the sharknado movies...you need more than guns. Medieval maces, chainsaws are good things to acquire.
Eh, still don’t know how much you plan to spend on ammo. You need to budget for target practice. If you just want to buy a gun for $1600 and stick it in the safe and not practice, then buy anything.
AKs are made in 308. Vepr makes one.
And, I’m fair sure there’s after market stocks of all sorts and types, even bullpup if you’re concerned about close quarters.
If you can’t legally obtain or are uncomfortable with guns, I recommend zombie mace or a zombie taser. There’s also a zombie perfume/body scent of death available. You spray it on yourself and then lie perfectly still on the ground. The zombies will think you’re dead and move on. If you sense it’s not working, Run!
Get wood. The ‘thock’ won’t carry as far as the ‘ping’. Noise discipline, and all that.
An 8 gauge. One shot, one discoloration.
Realistically, a 10 gauge or better, a SPAS 12 and lots of 00 Buck. The faster you take one into pieces, the safer you will be.
It’s a Crossfire MK1, Not semi, pump for 12ga (4 rounds?) and 5.56. No longer in production, but can be found on gun auction sites. $1,895 new. I fondled one and came real close. Now, I really like the concept, but not sure I’d buy something no longer being made.
