The National Football League suspended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for four regular season games without pay "for conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL," the league announced Monday afternoon.
The league also announced that the team—which won the Super Bowl earlier this year—would be fined $1 million and forced to forfeit its first-round pick in the 2016 draft and its fourth-round selection in the 2017 draft.

Brady stands to lose $5-6 million directly in salary and maybe more in endorsements. It will be a great show to see what would happen in a civil action when Brady’s pack of Doberman lawyers got the League Office fearless leaders on the witness stand.

There can't be any civil action against the league. The league has the power to fine and suspended and a player a chance to appeal under the NFL collective bargaining agreement.
Because Brady has been its quarterback. It's sort like having Lebron James on your team. But, is going to be 38 next season.
I wasn't aware the Packers were caught with over-inflated balls.
The best Brady could hope for is a two-game suspension.

The best that Brady can hope for is for reasonable standards of evidence to be applied.
The application of a penalty without sound evidence of infraction is asking the courts to stick their long noses into the business of football.
It was capricious at best,but will be seen as worse.

Brady nor any player has a legal recourse. The players agreed to an appeals process within the NFL to settle disputes regarding suspensions.
Page 23 of the Report says that both Brady and the Patriots cooperated substantially.

Come on, they weren’t asking him to hand over his phone, only the relevant texts.
And this wasn’t a court of law, it was an investigation according to league rules that Brady agreed to live with in order to be in the league.
We’re talking about voluntarily entered into contracts.
Hey if Brady and Co don’t like the terms of the contract or the rules of the game they’re free to do something else for a living. I suggest used car sales.

1. It isn't worth the time and energy, and the distraction.
2. In order to prove in a court of law that he actually suffered $5M to $6M in damages he is going to have to demonstrate that he took whatever steps he could to mitigate his damages. The fact that he did not cooperate with the NFL in their investigation is going to be a major hurdle for him to deal with in this regard.
3. In a lawsuit there's this inconvenient thing called a discovery process, where the NFL would have access to a lot of information and would be able to call a lot of witnesses to give depositions. Somehow, I don't see Brady wanting to go through with that.
Who determines what texts are relevant? And why would he want to give them more ammunition for assumptions and inferences?
I’ve read the part of the report that includes the measurements of the footballs, which shows the NFL’s methods are sloppy, inaccurate, and certainly not enough to establish guilt. One of the Colt’s footballs measured below the 12.5 limit also.
It’s true that the NFL isn’t a court of law, or even close to it, which is a shame. The NFL involves a lot a money and involves the reputations of many who have worked hard to get it. Our judicial system is probably the best in the world and has evolved over centuries to prevent the kind of railroading based on flimsy evidence that we’re seeing with Brady.
At least he has the right to appeal, which he is doing.
The Patriots are the Clintons of the NFL. They truly believe the rules don’t apply to them.

He signed up for the ways of the NFL and has made gazillions for it. An appeal could well get the penalty knocked down to two games, which is probably about right.
I’ll be interested to see how young Jimmy G. does during that time, as he’s Tom’s successor.
Oh, also, probable cause is the standard in civil suits anyway. No, there wasn’t any cross-examination, but again, this isn’t a court of law.
