ANNISTON, Ala. An east Alabama congressman has a plan to save taxpayers money when it comes to storing vintage firearms for the Army.
The plan involves moving the weapons to the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which includes its facility in Anniston.
Congressman Rogers says it's a win-win because the pistols are placed in very capable hands at the Civilian Marksmanship Program and it also saves taxpayers roughly $200,000 per year.
The M1911A1 pistol was once the standard sidearm for U.S. armed forces. Rogers says a little over 8,000 of the 100,000 pistols were sold to law enforcement and transferred to foreign countries for a small price. The rest are in storage.

Most would be rebuilders.
More of a “hanging piece” than a good shooter...
I have read that the Army rebuilt them before they went into storage.
Correct.
They were rebuilt with parts from other US 1911s.
There is a good chance he doesn’t have direct control over the CMP (IIRC).
Of course, he could get on the phone and tell his military subordinates to “forget it”.
Wonder if Rogers is up for reelection?
.they’ve put qualifications on buying the weapons
... same that they have for purchasing CMP Garands... still a bargain!
ymmv
He has control over EVERYTHING in this government.
The FCC is allegedly independent. But when he got on YouTube and told them to get their mind right on Net Neutrality, they pulled a 180 and they did.
I have a nice stock all original Remington Rand built in late 43. A good reliable shooter and not in the least inaccurate. It would be a crime to modify it in any way. It is history. There are plenty of cheap non military shooters out there to modify. I’m sure mine has seen arsenal work but both the slide and frame are RR and who knows .... It might have been used in WW2 Korea and Vietnam.
Same requirements as to buy a CMP M1 Garand.
Here’s hoping this will sneak by Obama somehow.
It is Golfing Season at the White House
It could easily slip by zippy since he doesn't do any presidential biz anyhoo. But doubtless one of the sycophants he's hired to take care of presidential biz will catch it. Then the potus will announce that he's helping protect Americans from themselves by cancelling the deal.
Sort of the way klintoon did with surplus M14s.
Okay.
When can I take delivery?
Some of these pistols may have had thousands of rounds put through them. It is the difference between a vintage car and the same model with 100,000 miles on it.
Nice then do all those M-14s.
L
good luck with that requirement standing.
It was only a matter of time, I suppose.
“Nice then do all those M-14s.”
Well, as the good ole BATFE says, “Once a “machine gun, always a machine gun.”
A few years ago the CMP took a bunch of M14s and broke them down into parts kits. But as you probably know, there is a law against registering any new machine guns.
A pal in Iowa owned two of these; both rebuilt at an Army arsenal. Neither one could be said to be accurate except out to 25 feet, maybe. Your RR is a jewel.
