Floyd Mayweather Jr. is widely regarded as the best fighter of his generation and one of the best defensive fighters of all time.
He enters his May 2 fight with Manny Pacquiao with an undefeated record of 48-0. There's a case to be made that Pacquiao, who has knocked out more opponents, can pull an upset, but most expect Floyd to win this fight the same way he has won fights for years making his opponent miss early, timing his counters to perfection, and eventually winning on points.
There's a radical juxtaposition between Mayweather's persona out of the ring (obnoxious, offensive, appalling) and his style within it (calm, intelligent, pragmatic). Over the years the fighters who've lost to Mayweather have spoken about his boxing brilliance in glowing terms, and explained what makes him so hard to beat.
Ricky Hatton (lost by knockout, December 8, 2007):
"I was fighting a genius, a boxing artist. I was getting more and more frustrated. Lose your cool against Floyd Mayweather and what you do is you get knocked out." to Showtime
Oscar De La Hoya (lost by split decision, May 5, 2007):
"Now we have to give credit to Mayweather because what Mayweather can do is what Mayweather Sr. calls 'walking your opponent down.' So what he does is he gets in the pocket and covers himself and he'll walk you down. And he'll let you throw punches and Pacquiao is probably going to keep throwing punches in bunches and he might tire himself out while Mayweather is just blocking everything. And then Mayweather can just come, throw his combinations of two or three punches, win the round, put the rounds in the bag, and win the fight." to HBO

For boxing fans only. You don’t have to post if you don;t care.
This will be a fun fight.
I see the Filipino knocking him out. I could be very wrong, of course.
I used to box. I always had a plan against a boxer with superior power until he hit me. Then my plan was to see my mother again one last time.
You jut get lost. The SOLID jab to the face 100 percent head on by someone really strong just almost completely disorients you. At least it did me.
And the same happened to opponents who I hit harder than from what I saw.
I agree.
This will be a ‘head’ game and he has a better head
But I’m sure you are favored to win if you have the longer reach (as Mayweather has )...
Boxing is a joke, these “boxers” wouldn’t last a minute against an MMA fighter.
Well now, that’s easy. He gets lots of practice at home . . . beating his wife.
Royce Gracie proved that back in the day.
All things being equal. I have to say that I have not followed professional boxing that close since heavyweight division got taken over with boring Klitchko fights. Not their fault they’re just that big and fast and freakish.
But reach without equal strength isn’t a big enough asset. You would know better if they have equal strength, I bet.
Because he only fights weaker opponents. He’s a good boxer, but he has a long history of avoiding fights he might lose, waiting until they get too old and lose and edge.
He’s 38 years old and commanding this big of a payoff?
There must not be very many young contenders good enough to knock his crown off.
Lots of MMA fighters lose to a strike caused KO and generally they aren’t as skilled at striking as boxers. With their minimal head movement and very different footwork, against a heavy puncher they are going to have to be very lucky not to get knocked out while trying to close. If they manage to close it’s a very different game of course.
Enough of those and the boxer goes down pretty easily, I'd imagine.
Not even to mention the sudden rush and hard take down.
Amen. Even going x3 two-minute rounds or x2 three-minute rounds can be exhausting, even for someone who is young & in good shape. Boxing takes a different type of psychology, fitness, and stamina than other sports. Max respect.
I’m not a boxing fan but will tune in for this one!
With rules to be followed, most MMA fighters wouldn’t last 3 rounds with a well trained boxer.
as an ex boxer have to respectfully disagree with you. If the boxer gets the first punch in, that’s all she wrote. I’ve even seen it happen with MMA.
