Legislative committee hearings aren’t known for their heart-pounding excitement. But, you might hear a round of cheers to excite the crowds at this week’s Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism & Internet Media Committee.

On Tuesday, the committee is scheduled to consider a proposal by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, that would provide greater labor protections for professional cheerleaders. Assembly Bill 202, which scored a 5-2 win in the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment earlier this month, would protect cheerleaders of professional sports teams from workplace abuses by classifying them as employees, not independent contractors.

I hope the CA based teams do what the Bills did; go Galt and get rid of the squads.

If I were the GOP, I would engage in a contract with Ms Lewinsky to stand outside EVERY event Herr Hillary conducts with a sign that says “Let’s Talk”.

I would pay Monica whatever it took to get her to do it.

It's crazy that professional cheerleaders are "independent contractors". They should be direct employees, just as the players are. Besides that, they should have a more expansive role with their teams as spokespeople and representatives at community and corporate events. If that had been the case, perhaps the NFL would've been in front of the issue of players being abusive to their mates.

Cheerleaders are under-rated. Sometime I think it's that people are bothered by women who are talented, beautiful, accomplished and often intelligent.

With all due respect the state of California has a water crisis, high unemployment, people and businesses fleeing because of high taxation and excessive regulations, and this is on the agenda? My sympathies to all California Freepers. You must all feel like the 7th Cavalry surrounded by hordes of liberals led by Chief Sitting Bull Moonbeam.

I love cheerleaders, I really do, but how many pro cheerleaders are there in California? Is this the best cause they can come up with / spend their time on? They should focus on rolling back some of the silly regs they already have, instead of creating new ones.

You want them to be like the players? What, the owner trades a Jasmin, Lequincha, and a Fluwasha for one Blonde Susan?

You can't be serious ...

Cheerleaders are animated jiggly decorations, nothing more. Talented? No. Beautiful? Yeah, in a lot of cases. Accomplished? At WHAT??? Intelligent? Doubtful, but certainly not demonstrated by their chosen avocation.

"They should be direct employees, just as the players are. Besides that, they should have a more expansive role with their teams as spokespeople and representatives at community and corporate events."

Knew a few Raiderettes while they were in LA. They all held full time regular jobs, the squad was strictly a part time thing. I don't know about them being "spokesmen" for the teams, but they certainly were/are ambassadors, and performed at all kinds of charity and corporate functions.

I'm not sure how valid that "independent contractor" classification is anyway from an IRS perspective. On the other hand, they did not get much money (the Rams cheerleaders made even less) from actual cheerleading. But they were allowed to sell calendars and other swag at events.

I don’t understand why the NFL teams have cheerleaders. The games are in huge stadiums so most of the fans can’t see them well or hear the cheers they are doing. High school and many college stsdiums allow the cheerleaders to be up close to fans and really lead the crowd in cheers. Not so at NFL games.

If they become employees, the NFL teams will be subject to affirmative action and discrimination laws, will they not? What will happen is many female cheerleaders will be passed up for homosexual males, and transgender male/females as well. Or, they will eliminate the cheerleading squad all together.

Lorena, it never benefits the people you supposedly intend to benefit when you tell business how to run their business. But, being a liberal Democrat that concept is over your head; above your pay grade so to speak.
