The elephant on the Green Line trains is the behavior of many of the young people who ride the trains: appalling profanity, an utter disregard for the tidiness of the carriages, the blatant freeloading. To the last, it has not even been a year of operating yet and there is a passenger constituency so accustomed to not paying that a train ride might as well be another in a long list of entitlements. Our elected worthies seem disinclined to point this out. In the meantime, our governor, Mark Dayton, when he is not championing the return of the umlauts to the road signs in Lindström, is ridiculously unsatisfied with various education bills that don't propose to spend at least $695 million, or more than one third of the state's surplus. House Republicans have proposed a $156 million increase in education spending over the two-year budget for 2016-17. Senate DFLers want $361 million in new spending. Dayton scoffs. He is greedily eyeing that anticipated $2 billion surplus and wishes to pass it out to the bottomless pit of public education, there being no evidence that money spent equals academic achievement or closes the achievement gap. Well, there are those superintendents who must be kept in high clover.

Public transport will, by definition, always have the public on board. Having met and observed many of them, I say no thank you.
It means indoctrination
Nothing less
Schools ... public schools ... government schools ... are in the business to turn out mindless drones
We're about to graduate about 125 kids ... almost all of voting age, and as far as I know ... none have been registered to vote and none have a clue as to whether they are democrat or republican ...
but
They DO know they're socialist ... not by name, nor terminology or even as a political stance ... but by their inability to know and understand America and our purpose in this world and THEIR nonchalant attitude regarding the socio/political structure of what will govern their lives
In essence ... be in complete agreement to slavery
Are parents not even expected to teach manners anymore? Teachers have to do that too? Public schools already provide all books and supplies, free breakfast and lunch, after school baby-sitting, clinics and psychologists, in addition to what we try to teach them in math, science, language, etc. ... and of course, we are expected to “make it fun” all the time. A party every day. Learning so fun it’s better than the iPhones they all have under their desks... now we’re suppose to teach them manners too? Well, I have tried, but if their mom’s stream of boyfriends is only teaching them where to find the nastiest rap and hip-hop songs and how to download porn, wish me luck.
The only properly behaved and respectful people on our campus are the ROTC kids.
Mature decorum, tidy appearance, cordial and quiet behavior.... those are not impossible things to learn or demonstrate.
Manners are the bourgeoisie’s way of oppressing the proletariat. If anything, all that money is spent to make certain the youts have no manners. Anyway. With 12,000 or more spent per child, they should be the smartest people to ever walk the planet. Yet, they’re the dumbest. If my wife and I had 12,000 to spend on each kid, we’d figure out a way to teach them something.
Whatever happened to Minnesota Nice?
Manners means conforming to a standard.
That standard in our culture is based on Western Civilization and European Christianity.
The left hates this and seeks its destruction.
Then why on earth would they teach “manners” in school?
“Mature decorum, tidy appearance, cordial and quiet behavior.... those are not impossible things to learn or demonstrate.”
Acting white is not permitted, and will soon be a crime.
Because manners are primarily taught at home, supplemented by school.
Manners were developed for your own protection. You were safer if you didn’t annoy others. Lack of manners once got you a punch in the nose. That’s been ruled out of bounds now, so why have manners?
There’s an elevator in our building and these ‘college kids’ (supposedly intelligent) don’t GET how it works.
They are looking at their cell phones and walk on any elevator door that opens... then they’re surprised when the door opens and they’re NOT where they expected.
They will knock you down to get ON the elevator ahead of you and will shove past you to get on when the door opens, and it’s YOUR floor to get off...
The don’t get that others need to get off, before THEY can get on!!
It’s like a cattle crossing with these idiots.
Manners do not fit into the Saul Alinsky paradigm now embraced by our educators.
Back in the 50s our 9th grade teacher, Ms. Seaks, now in Heaven, taught us manners, etiquette, how to dress for a date, table manners, chew with your mouth closed, etc. Guys, always wear dark socks. That has been an almost subconscious guide to me all these many years
My husband once made all the guys on his wrestling team put away their cell phones while eating at a restaurant on their way home from a tournament. They were speechless. He told them it’s rude to be on your phone when you are at the table with other people. Ignore your phone and talk to the people whom you are eating. A few, very few, admitted their parents had the same rules-less than 5% of the guys.
Bad manners is really just a reflection of how you value others. Self centered people do not care how their actions and words affect others. Good manners show that you place other people ahead of yourself by treating them respectfully and making sure that your words and actions do not offend others.
Our society is getting more and more narcissistic and the bad manners reflect that change.
I used to wish I had money to splurge on clothes or furniture, now I dream of materials for my kids from The Etiquette Factory. Manners matter.
!!!
Conservative formula: Mediocrity + money = more expensive mediocre education
Civility is soooo ethnocentric.
Manners start at home. I for one do not think it is up to the public education system to teach my kids proper daily manners. It might have been their place to execute discipline for inappropriate behavior, but the kids knew better to begin with.
Not paying for the train is not about manners, that is theft.
High etiquette is often not learned until they are old enough to sit around the big dining table with the adults on Holidays. That level of etiquette wins them the opportunity to the ‘better things’ in life.
This I can so for sure though, I recently ventured into a Chik-fil-a for lunch. Manners? Wow!! I was impressed with the staff. They even seemed genuinely happy in their work too. But it was the level of politeness that blew me away!
