Tim McGraw is facing a backlash from country music fans who say that his decision to headline a concert for a gun control charity could end his career.
The Louisiana-raised singer is scheduled to raise money with a Hartford, Connecticut show on July 17 for the Sandy Hook Promise group, which organized in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in late 2012.
However, anti-gun control commenters have said that McGraw, 47, risks losing his career the same way female country trio the Dixie Chicks never bounced back from criticizing President George W Bush.
The conservator pro-gun blog Bearing Arms published a piece saying that McGraw's fan base 'overwhelmingly supports gun rights and views a concert benefiting Sandy Hook Promise as being a betrayal'.
It draws a parallel to the Dixie Chicks fall from the graces of country music's fold after singer Natalie Maines made disparaging remarks about Bush in the lead up to the Iraq War.
Commenters on the conservative blog Breitbart bemoaned a red state hero's turn towards the perceived liberal cause of gun control.
'Not real country singers in my book anyway,' AWRHawkins said.
'It is sadly apparent that these kinds of girly men are helping to destroy country music as we (used to) know it,' another, BloodofAlbion75, said. McGraw's opening act Bill Currington backed away from the project after backlash saying, 'I've never been one to take on controversial issues - I'm a singer.'
'I do feel strongly about honoring and supporting the Sandy Hook community and will be making a donation to a local organization,' he said on his Facebook page.
However, McGraw, the headliner, stood by his decision when speaking to the Washington Post.

I (completely) agree this could terribly harm his career.
First I had heard of this.
The ramifications will be large.
Don’t do it, McGraw.
Is this part of the False Flag America tour?
He still claims to support the 2nd Amendment. He’s a damn liar.
Yeah, Faith Hill might as well sing at the next DNC convention instead of Monday Night Football.

Boycott them both. Time to DixieChick them and have local DJs pull their records off. Time for America to do what he fags do on Pizza owners and bakeries or else be prepared to be rolled over. Time for country western fans to show some muscle. Put up or shut up time.
or George Jones =)
All icons of dominant culture must be turned.....leverage will be applied...Think the country angle started w willi nelson......
H-ell class I had in college spent 2-3 weeks studying eddie murphy and how the GOV. promoted his career .....
Your tax dollars at work.
The idiots on the left STILL have not figured out Sandy Hook was mental health issue and not a gun control issue....
Unless you include “gun free” zones as a bullet point...
he deserves the dixie chicks treatment.
MADtv’s great Dixie Chicks spoof

Maybe it’s time to (sorry if this is a bit rude) follow the suggestion of Waylon Jennings’ son Shooter and “Put the o back in country”...
Shooter had a point - glad you repeated it as I missed it previously. It has a wider application, IMO.
Like you didn’t know he is an uber LIBERAL at heart
His son hates the USA.
And if you make a living singing about GOD, guns, COUNTRY, booze, women, and fast cars, don’t throw stones at what puts bread and butter on your table.
We still remember the Dixie Chickens....
Shut your Pie Hole and just sing if you don’t want a backlash.
I boycott anti-gunners businesses when ever possible.
It would not be the first time that country music stars have totally misread their audience. Remember some lame Dixie chicks?
