When military aviation buffs pack into the Marine Corps Beaufort Air Show in South Carolina, they'll be wowed by the Navy's Blue Angels. But a new kind of history will also take flight in the team: a woman in the cockpit. U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Katie Higgins is the first female pilot in the team's 69-year history. Michelle Miller took to the sky to see how Higgins got her wings.

She is flying Fat Albert C-130
I guess these guys know their business but it isn’t likely she’d even be there if standards weren’t lowered in the first place. Whatever. Good luck.
Because a woman can never, ever be as good as a man at anything, right?
This announcement came on the same day my Marine son, who is currently in flight school at Pensacola, advanced far enough in his training to earn the privilege of donning his flight suit for the first time.
“Because a woman can never, ever be as good as a man at anything, right?”
No, because it is statistically far less likely that a woman could be as good at this than that a woman would be selected based on a PC need for a woman to be selected.
Is she also black and a Muzzy?
...Because a woman can never, ever be as good as a man at anything, right?
A man will never be “as good” as a woman in a wide array of ways.
Why fret about it, it is what it is
It’s the men that have to play catch up their entire lives, except in a few specific ways.
I’m planning on a trip to Ft. Worth in Sept. to see them.
Hope this isn’t a PC decision. The C-130 should be a pretty safe ride.
It used be be said that “the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world.” Back when P and C were simply letters in the alphabet.
Fat Albert? Hey hey hey. You want a drink with a little something extra in it? Hey hey hey.
Congratulations. You should be very proud.
Nope..she’s very attractive..and a third generation military aviator...
C’mon. If there is a frontline job for woman in a military it is flying the airplane. We can find many reasons why women makes crappy infantry, artillerists and sailors but why can’t you let them fly airplanes?
I have tickets for the grandstand at Beaufort tomorrow. Can’t wait to see them again.
My husband is a retired Navy pilot. He tells me it takes great physical strength to wrestle an F18 in flight while doing those maneuvers.
This woman is not piloting one of the show jets, she is piloting the transport plane.
The problem with your theory is that there is no mental or physiological reason whatsoever that a woman can’t be just as good at this particular activity as a man.
It does, however, do a good job of illustrating the counter-productive nature of PC whereby many will assume she isn’t as good simply because she’s a woman.
Is PC wasn’t an issue, and positions were handed out strictly on merit, we could all say, “Look, a female Blue Angel!” and go on about our business.
This case has nothing whatsoever to do, inherently, with the ongoing desperation to force women thru Ranger School.
“Because a woman can never, ever be as good as a man at anything, right?”
Dispute what I said. Dispute that they dumbed down requirements UNTIL women could pass.
Crybaby.
Allstate will give her a bonus check for every 6 months of flying in which she is accident free.
And yet they have separate titles for Chess champ. Billiards, Bowling, Golf. There are differences and they go deep.
