Ice on Mars: Mars has belts of glaciers consisting of frozen water

Mars has distinct polar ice caps, but Mars also has belts of glaciers at its central latitudes in both the southern and northern hemispheres. A thick layer of dust covers the glaciers, so they appear as surface of the ground, but radar measurements show that underneath the dust there are glaciers composed of frozen water. New studies have now calculated the size of the glaciers and thus the amount of water in the glaciers.

Although I personally believe that we should build a base on the moon first -- and leave Mars for the robotics probes for now -- this is an interesting find. A lot of water sitting there for our use when we finally begin the long job of terraforming Mars.

Not really, as much of the frozen "ice" on Mars is Frozen Carbon Dioxide. Need to distinguish between solid H20 and solid C02.

I'm 100% sure that when the terraforming of Mars starts someday (not soon), there will be "environmentalist" screaming to preserve the "pristine beauty" of the planet.

Well, you know, water freezes in space, so that all they have to do is start pouring it towards Earth until an ice-sickle reaches from Mars to California. California can cut off what they need, when they need it. Then we will get illegal aliens sliding down the sickle, to do the work worldly illegals won’t do.

The gravity of Mars is not sufficient to sustain terraforming for any important length of time. Instead, we should Martiaform the planet. That is, dig down below the surface and inhabit the subsurface of Mars. ... Unless of course someone else has already accomplished that to a great degree.
