In a speech one month ago, the first black president of the United States challenged millions of white Americans to resist the convenient allure of overlooking the countrys blemished moral record. It was a dual challenge, actuallyfirst to the classical understanding of American exceptionalism, but also to Americas persistent critics, who abjure the concept of exceptionalism altogether.
What greater expression of faith in the American experiment than this? President Barack Obama said. What greater form of patriotism is there than the belief that America is not yet finished, that we are strong enough to be self-critical, that each successive generation can look upon our imperfections and decide that it is in our power to remake this nation to more closely align with our highest ideals?

Maybe a National Day of Mourning for democrats?
No, the holiday that became Memorial Day was Decoration Day, a day designated for decorating the graves of those who died fighting in the War Between the States, both Union and Confederate dead.
The surrender, with honor, of the Army of Norther Virginia by General Robert E Lee should be celebrated. As should the hard work he and many of his fellow Confederates did, post war, in helping pick up the pieces and push the nation towards reconcilliation.
My bad. Thanks.
Another reminder that the victors in a war have the privilege of re-writing history.
We better not lose the next one.
What day would you select? The surrender of The Army of Northern Virginia (R. E. Lee), the surrender of Joseph Johnston’s army, the surrender of the armies in Texas, or some other date?
I wouldn't be mourning them. More like dancing on their graves.
Most of our leaders post-war promoted reconciliation. I cannot stand by and watch these scalliwags tear down our amazing history. I’m from NYC and remember the horrible Liz Holtzman voting against restoring RE Lee’s citizenship. This is from a town that was totally COPPERHEAD! I should know, my Irish immigrant family were all draft dodgers and copperheads. We made up for it in WWI and WWII.
Another holiday? I will take it. I love holidays. I found it incredible that folks were complaining about a MJK day.....I was all about it. Starting in 10th grade another day off.....oh heck yeah. I wanted more and still do. Italy has around 20 or so. We are so way behind on national holidays. We need to double them and I don’t care how it is done.
They already do, it's called "Memorial Day" although it's significance is lost on most of its celebrants.
"The freedom of Southern Manhood reposes on the institutuion of slavery." - Jefferson Davis
"The freedom of Women reposes on the instution of abortion." - Abortion Feminists.
Guess that means we’ll also need national holidays for when the U.S. defeated the Mexicans, the English, the Spanish, and the Injuns, hey?
Libs are like Muslims, they talk peace but everything they do causes strife.
Recall, of course, that when the Army of the Potomac was winning it’s victory at Gettysburg, and Grant’s Army was winning the seige of Vicksburg, there were draft riots in NYC.
But the Union soldiers, by and large, understood the honorable nature and behavior of their Confederate opponants. General Chamberlain, a Maine college professor and abolitionist, calling the AotP to Carry Arms as the ANV paraded past to stack arms and lay down their colors, got the sentiment exactly right. If only today’s Progressives could follow his example.
And I say that as a descendent of Pennsylvania abolitionists who had relatives spread out across various PA Civil War units.
“I wouldn’t be mourning them.”
You misunderstood my comment, or perhaps it wasn’t clear enough. I meant a day for democrats to mourn the loss of their slaves.
Guess that means we’ll also need national holidays for when the U.S. defeated the Mexicans, the English, the Spanish, and the Injuns, hey?
BTW, I do love the idea of a national Confederacy-Defeated day; it would be such a healing holiday, helping to unify the country, proving the superiority of the northern states, inferiority of the southern states, etc.
Only because you don’t think like they do. If you would just think the same, then they wouldn’t have to be so hateful toward you - so in reality it’s your fault.
“helping to unify the country, proving the superiority of the northern states, inferiority of the southern states, etc.”
___________
I try not to be a petty stickler for details, but it is a misconception that the south went to war with the north. they went to war against the United States of America. In there lies the treachery and tyrrany. This was not a squirmnish between states, it was an attack on the US, by treasonous states.
