The Left on its ongoing rampage against history. This article is bordering on Stalinesque eliminating people from history. By the way Mr. Beutler we have a day to memorialize the Civil War. It is called Memorial Day. That Monday in May was first called Declaration Day in memory of all those in Blue and Grey who died until renamed and expanded.

No, the holiday that became Memorial Day was Decoration Day, a day designated for decorating the graves of those who died fighting in the War Between the States, both Union and Confederate dead.

The surrender, with honor, of the Army of Norther Virginia by General Robert E Lee should be celebrated. As should the hard work he and many of his fellow Confederates did, post war, in helping pick up the pieces and push the nation towards reconcilliation.

Another reminder that the victors in a war have the privilege of re-writing history.

We better not lose the next one.

What day would you select? The surrender of The Army of Northern Virginia (R. E. Lee), the surrender of Joseph Johnston’s army, the surrender of the armies in Texas, or some other date?

Another holiday? I will take it. I love holidays. I found it incredible that folks were complaining about a MJK day.....I was all about it. Starting in 10th grade another day off.....oh heck yeah. I wanted more and still do. Italy has around 20 or so. We are so way behind on national holidays. We need to double them and I don’t care how it is done.

They already do, it's called "Memorial Day" although it's significance is lost on most of its celebrants.

“What greater expression of faith in the American experiment than this?”

On what basis should the American people accept anything Obama says concerning the American Experiment? The man is nothing but a liar whose place in history will be a nasty joke.

Guess that means we’ll also need national holidays for when the U.S. defeated the Mexicans, the English, the Spanish, and the Injuns, hey?

Libs are like Muslims, they talk peace but everything they do causes strife.

BTW, I do love the idea of a national Confederacy-Defeated day; it would be such a healing holiday, helping to unify the country, proving the superiority of the northern states, inferiority of the southern states, etc.

I am not a fan of the Confederacy, but this is just stupid.

Confederate soldiers fought as tenaciously and bravely as any people in history for the cause they believed in. The war was at root a dispute over what America was going to be.

I think the CSA was mostly, though not entirely, on the wrong side of that dispute. I’m glad they lost, for American and the world, but valor even in a mistaken cause can be honored.

BTW, we name warships and fighting helicopters after Indians, individuals and tribes that fought America as hard as they could and lost. Mostly with a great deal less honor than showed by the CSA.

Now we all recognize those Indians are Americans too. Fail to see why we can’t do the same with Confederates.

Only if “The New Republic” keeps Johnathan Glass’ name at the top of their letterhead.

I am thinking contemporary women and men would have been horrified at the thought of this. Lincoln, I know, would have been.

It's good to see the Stalinist drones at The New Republic have found their soul brothers at last in the ISIS guys with their sledgehammers. I'll keep the history, thanks.

This is a great idea!

We can call the holiday Unification Day.

Just like on Firefly.

It's not going to happen. It's just clickbait for trolls.

When writer critic Lee Siegel was disgraced for attacking his own critics under fake identities on the Internet, he tried to stage a comeback with "Memo to the South: Go Ahead, Secede Already!"

Running down half the country (whichever half) is just a cheap and easy way to attract attention to oneself online.
