"Hawaiians absolutely believe in science. How that plays out on this mountain is going to be a matter of getting the right set of people in the room to negotiate some sort of compromise that everyone can live with," Apo told reporters.
Stopping construction would be key, he said.
"You can't even get to the discussion point until they stop construction," he said.

The dispute has pitted Native Hawaiians, who believe the telescope site is sacred because it is where their creation story begins, against scientists, who believe it's an ideal location for one of the world's largest telescopes because of its remote and sheltered position, nestled in the crater of a dormant volcano.
About 300 protesters gathered at the mountain Thursday, and police and state law enforcement arrested 20 people who tried to block a road leading to the summit of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island. Eleven more were arrested atop the peak, the highest point in the state.
Project opponents question whether land appraisals were done correctly and whether Native Hawaiian groups were consulted, so they have tried to prevent construction of the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope. Project leaders say they regret the arrests but safe access to the site needs to be preserved.

Billion, did you say Billion? The Reverends Jackson and Sharpton will be there soon!
Can’t they just think of it as a nose ring or something?
The university makes a lot of money from renting telescope time.

The return to the stone age is what these people want. Some groups are UNABLE to advance technologically; and now that they have a hearing they flex their ignorant muscles.
As with ANYONE who stands in the way of science: FOAD.
Then you would be guessing wrong. 30 meters !
So-called native Hawaiians are an officially recognized superior racial minority with special privileges that would have made the Nazis blush.
As early as the 1920’s “pure Hawaiians” were said to be less than 25% of the population.
There are now no-go areas on Oahu where “haoles” are in constant danger of being beaten up by locals who proudly claim racial privilege while drawing welfare checks. Think Ferguson on a large scale with a liberal state government well to the left of Massachusetts.
It is truly a 30-meter aperture, but the primary mirror is made up of many smaller mirror segments for ease of manufacture and stability.
That’s truly a large scope.
I remember when 200-inches was the largest.
Seems like just yesterday. What is the largest scope on the planet right now?
Anyone know?
There’s already a dozen or so on the Mauna Kea summit. The Keck 10 meter telescopes are beyond huge...the new one will be 30 meters.
Go up to the summit if you can...a surreal experience.
The GTC on the Canary Islands is 10.4 meters. The twin Keck telescopes are 10 meters. The largest telescope with a single mirror is the 8-meter Subaru Telescope.
Seems like the same primitive mentality that murdered Captain James Cook.
