Ruger VS Smith and Wesson
04.03.15 | Big Truck

Posted on 04/03/2015 3:11:40 PM PDT by big truck

I'm considering the purchase of either the Ruger LCR .357 snub nose (1 7/8" barrel) or the S&W 340 M&P .357 with the same barrel length. Anyone own/carry either gun? Pros and cons? Preferences?

LCR hands down no question. Far superior trigger pull. Get the Crimson Trace grips too. You won’t regret the purchase.

Every weapon has its purpose. Like the 45-70 lever gun the 44 mag Super Blackhawk 5.5” is a “save your life” dangerous game weapon. Yes, you can hunt with it. Where I am it is warming up and the bears are waking up, will be everywhere and are hungry. I never go into the woods in my truck or on foot without one of them. Yes, good bear spray is with me as well. For target practice you can use lower power “Cowboy” loads. Normally always loaded with HSM “Bear Loads”, 305gr for the 44 or 430gr for the 45-70. Hard cast flat nose bullets. The idea is penetration. These rounds are not designed for home protection. They will go through all the drywall, siding, several pine trees and land a half mile down the road. For bear, moose or cape buffalo they will shatter every bone in its body and drop it.

Practice with these weapons and loads can be painful. You will get tennis elbow for a month, if you can hold on and still aim a good sight picture.

I prefer the Blackhawk single action as it allows me an added safety. I can always lower the hammer if I decide not to shoot. The extra time is not there with practice.

If you choose the 44 mag, get the Triple K holster and belt. Outstanding after you learn how to break in the leather.

Do it if you have that purpose.

A snub-nosed .357, regardless of make, is very uncomfortable to shoot. Very stout recoil, lots of muzzle blast. I would never recommend anyone settling for such a gun. It's so unpleasant to shoot you'll be reluctant to practice with it, and if you ever really need it, you'll be more afraid of the gun than of your opponent.

This is not a gun for a beginner. It's a gun for experts, and it will take a lot of uncomfortable shooting to become an expert with it.

My wife's household gun is a full-sized Ruger .357 Magnum. It's big enough to soak up the recoil and isn't too bad to shoot. But it's not a "carry" gun.

There are few bears in Metro Atlanta, but hey, I still want it. :)

My feeling is, suppose there are a LOT of deer?

Suppose they are all in lightly-armored vehicles?

You've always been a sensitive guy, Laz.

It's one of the traits that drew me to you like a moth to a flame, buddy.

I must answer.

I am not of the opinion that 1/2 inch in and 1/2 inch out is enough.

I want 1/2 inch in, 1/2 inch our, 1/2 inch hole in the wall, the next wall, the next wall, the load bearing wall, the mailbox, and the car.

LOL

(Not really, I cribbed that funny text from a forum) lol

Realistically, all the forums say, this is not an HD or a carry gun.

But they all say it is a FUN gun.

And, that's enough to sell me. :)

Well, For example. The 44 Mag only holds 6 rounds. The 45-70 lever might hold 4 or 5. Even the renowned Rem 700 308 deer gun. I have 6 or 8 deer in my yard much of the time.

I would say that if as in the old days with Buffalo Bill he was riding on a train and wanted to kill about 100 Buffalo he would use a “modern sporting rifle” aka 5.56 and have about 10-12 magazines full of M-855 green tip.

I have a similar philosophy as your modern Buffalo Bill.

Lots of buffalos in Atlanta. I have the means to feed my family, though.

Test fire it first.

Until you get to a 4” barrel, I bet you can’t get 2 shots inside the 8 ring at 7 yards, in less than 2 seconds, so its of no use.

I’ve got the S&W 686 in the 7 round w 4” barrel.
Steel...no light-weight material.
It’s for field carry in a shoulder holster.

CCW is fraught w compromise.
Take your time and choose wisely.

Definitely get one to try out and shoot some hot loads.

A friend of mine is a big guy — 6’5” and functionally strong, a cop, and police firearms instructor. He got an airweight .357 for backup carry.

His department requires officers qualify with a 50 round course of fire for any gun an officer plans to carry. He got 15 rounds in and had to abandon it. He said his wrist wasn’t right for two weeks.

He ended up selling the gun back.

Test to see which is best for you. Sight a target, close your eyes, point the gun at the spot you want to hit, then open your eyes. The one that’s on target will more often be the one that will shoot more naturally and be better for you.

I can’t answer that until later this month. It’s been almost two years since I was last cut on, but I start another set of consultations on the 13th and may begin another round of orthopedic and neurological surgeries shortly after that, depending on what the shoulder, neck, hand, and neuro docs say.

My sentiments too. My S&W .357 mod 28 in 4 inch barrel is accurate enough for me. At 25yds & 7yds I’m always in the 10 ring.

No worries either way — this time, I am definitely going — but I sure wouldn’t mind making the car cost go down from it’s present estimate of 600! :)
