On March 27, 2012, JetBlue pilot Clayton Osbon had a mid-air breakdown, running through the aisles of a Las Vegas -bound flight and making terrifying comments like "Pray f***ing now for Jesus Christ [ ] this plane will never make it to Vegas."
Three years later, he has filed a $14.9 million lawsuit against JetBlue, alleging that the airline allowed him to fly despite knowing that he was mentally unfit.
In the lawsuit, filed on Friday in U.S. District Court in New York, Osbon claims breach of contract and negligence, alleging that JetBlue should've known that he was incapable of piloting the plane.
Osbon claims that his frighteningly erratic behavior that day was due to a seizure that resulted from a head injury he had as a child; the lawsuit claims that seizure "severely impaired his ability to perform basic activities, caused him to hallucinate, and caused extreme feelings of paranoia and religious fervor."
On the day that Osbon unnerved the passengers and crew of Flight 191, he missed a preflight meeting, arrived at John F. Kennedy airport "disheveled and disoriented" and bungled a number of preflight checks before telling the flight's first officer that he was unfit to fly.
After Osbon started to make a number of disturbing comments, he was restrained by passengers and the flight made an unscheduled landing in Amarillo, Texas so that he could be removed from the plane. He was charged with interfering with a flight crew but was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

No testing required. It’s obvious even to those not trained in diagnosing mental health issues. As to the pilot, let’s just be glad he didn’t commit planeacide.
Sounds like he is qualified to fly in Europe.
Gimme a break......
Head injury as a child?
OK, now what about that scar, Mr. Obama?
I suspect this clown knew he had mental issues. Why did he not take himself off flight status?
” he was restrained by passengers and the flight made an unscheduled landing in Amarillo,”
Juts like Flight 93, the passengers has the brains to apprehend the scumbag before he did a Germanwings. Same thing happened on my uncle’s flight in 08’ when an idiot tried to open the emergency hatch midlfight. Every dude in the section jumped him after a lot of screaming, and some wanted to really kick his ass.
Article: before telling the flight's first officer that he was unfit to fly.
Should have read the article first I guess. He should go to jail.
“Why did he not take himself off flight status?”
He tried to;”arrived at John F. Kennedy airport “disheveled and disoriented” and bungled a number of preflight checks before telling the flight’s first officer that he was unfit to fly.”
“Should have read the article first I guess. “
And I should have read all the comments first! 8^)
So he's suing them for not firing him?
That was my question. How did he suffer $15 million in damages by the incident on the plane? Sounds like it all ended as well as could be expected, all things considered.
More like “gibsmedat”.
And he was damaged how? He should have no more of a case than any of the thousands of passengers he flew sueing HIM for getting behind the yoke while in his ADMITTED nutsy cuckoo state
If I remember this JetBlue incident correctly, the pilot wanted to crash the New York - Las Vegas flight and the co-pilot managed to lock the pilot out of the cockpit in order to stop him.
A burly prison guard, who was a passenger on the plane, sat on the pilot as he, the pilot, laid down in the aisle with other passengers helping to hold him down. All this was captured on passenger’s camera phones, and it aired on all the evening news broadcasts, along with interviews of the New York State prison guard.
I bet the licker sales skyrocketed after that episode.
DUH! Do ya think. Yet the idiot that flew that jet into the French mountain top was also a well known mental case by the time he got on board. Go figure.
