If this is something you want to do, keep it to pure tech (related to Microsoft if you want), neutral but critical if it demands it. Not the type of fanboy nonsense those guy like to.

I see VanDeKoik is starting in on you, in the same way he started in the Apple/Mac thread. . . trying to make it what HE wants it to be, rather than what the users want it to be. He wants to always define the topics his way. Too bad.

Okay, ST, that's fine. I look forward to your occasional comments. FWIW, I have two copies of Win7 on my Mac Mini -- one is a VM in VMware Fusion, for running alongside the Mac applications, and the other as BootCamp for when I need to dedicate all the Mini's horsepower to a Windows task.

Is there any reason to have two installs? You can set up the VMware Fusion to link into the BootCamp Windows partition. There are some distinct advantages to having it both ways. . . virtual HD files are easy to replace if they get corrupted with malware. But Windows is hard to get compromised these days. If you need the space, just link the VMWare into the BootCamp Windows partition.

There are multiple reviews in PC magazines where they report that the best Windows computers are Macs both running in BootCamp or in a Virtual Machine.

The Windows Ping List threads will be defined by what the members of the list -- as an aggregate -- want them to be, not by individual members, however noisy or pushy they may be. It happens that I concur with VanDeKoik that sticking to tech topics is the wisest choice, but even that will be ultimately determined by the FReepers who join the threads and keep them going. I'm just another commenter in that regard.

Windows has a huge base of users, who percentage-wise are far less happy with Windows than Apple users are with Apple products; that's just a fact. So the opportunity for negativism on a Windows thread is pretty widespread, and I'm sure we'll have some threads that get rambunctious. Nevertheless I have hope that there won't be too many food fights and that nobody gets seriously injured. :)

Good on ya for starting the Windows/MS ping list, mate. I think it’ll be a hit.

Yep, that's an an excellent point. In fact, a couple of years ago when VMware first made it possible to use the BootCamp partition as a VM I did so. Unfortunately their technology wasn't quite ready for prime time back then, and while it made the BootCamp copy of Windows run as a VM while in OS-X, the next time I tried to boot the Mini into BootCamp, Windows drilled itself into the ground and I lost the partition's ability to either boot, or work as a VM.

Now, probably that issue has been long since fixed. But the experience told me that for the cost of an extra Win7 license (which doesn't cost me much given my MSDN membership), I can have two independent instances that don't collide. And I've found that the annoyance of having to keep two copies updated with Windows Updates and updates of the various application, is far less than having to rebuild, or even restore from an image backup.

Besides, I have half a dozen instances of Windows to tend at home, and the incremental pain of 6 vs. 5 is minimal.

> There are multiple reviews in PC magazines where they report that the best Windows computers are Macs both running in BootCamp or in a Virtual Machine.

That is certainly my experience.

Things get WAY OUT OF HAND with the NUTS who seem to be obsessive/compulsive in threads on products they say they HATE .

Sorta like how PDSers are irresistibly drawn to Sarah Palin threads, eh? I agree. It's a curious phenomenon.

Tim?

You Apple Hate mongering Brigade members allow your bile to spread to any thread, don't you? You will claim that a fellow Freeper is somehow a homosexual or even Tim Cook just because he points out that Microsoft had a pro-Gay policy ten years ago. You guys are delusional in your hatred of Apple. Your nastiness knows no civil bounds. Give it a rest.

How about everybody give it a rest and just drop it.

If Dr. Bogus Pachysandra felt tacticalogic's comment was out of line, or not, that's not ours to answer in their stead. All I saw in return was a question mark.

For Pete's sake, folks, this is the first thread of the new ping list -- the announcement of the list creation. No food fights yet, please.

Thanks.

I agree. . . I was very disappointed to see them carrying it over on to your new threads. Sorry about that.

Well, my nick is ‘Windy’, so it only seems fitting that I make a request to be added to a Windows ping list.

Please add me. I promise not to talk too loud or barf on the carpet.

> For all you Apple Mac/iPhone/iPad/iPad/iOS users who are also Windows users, dayglored has taken the leap of faith to start a new FreeRepublic Windows/Microsoft PING list. If you are interested in things Microsoft or Windows, this will be the place to discuss them POLITELY and CIVILLY. Freepmail dayglored on the thread and ask to be included on his Ping list. NOT AN APPLE/MAC/IPHONE/IPAD PING!

Thank you, Swordmaker, for the cross-ping to your Apple/Mac/iThing list -- much appreciated!!

Like the Man said, anybody from Apple/Mac-land is welcome to join the Windows list as long as you have legit interest in Windows -- perhaps you have a Windows machine, or are considering getting one, or use one at work. Or even if it's just that you were frightened as a child by a picture of Steve Ballmer, you'll find support on the Windows Ping List.

Our focus will be primarily technical issues -- new releases, updates, security alerts, threats, new features and functions -- and for the most part we'll try to stay away from politics and social concerns that happen to involve Microsoft or various people who work[ed] there. Those concerns are real, but there's enough tech to talk about without vectoring off into more contentious realms all the time.

Finally, those of you who know me only from my comments on the Apple/Mac threads for many years, well, surprise! I've been waiting for there to be a Windows Ping List so long I finally had to do it myself, so there. :)

Hope to see you on the flip-flop; I'm heading off to Dreamsville, it's been a long night. TTYL!
