As he returns to run the NBC News Group, Andy Lack faces one of the same puzzles he tried to solve a decade and a half ago: how to make MSNBC work.
While he was gone, MSNBC changed from traditional news to a political network with a liberal lens. Now that it is mired in a ratings slump, Lacks mandate as chairman will be figuring out if MSNBC needs a complete overhaul or a sharpening of its mission.
The current picture is seriously ugly. Through early March, Chris Hayes viewership at 8 p.m. on weekdays was down 23 percent from last year, Rachel Maddow was off 24 percent and Lawrence ODonnell down 26 percent. Among the 25-to-54-year-old demographic that is the basis for advertising sales, the prime-time lineup lost nearly half its audience. Daytime isnt much better.

The leftist base isn’t interested in ideas, they just want the money. Welfare baby mommas vote Dem for the checks, if they have to listen to their betters prattle on, they just get pissed
So they’re admitting the liberal biased MSNBC is a loser?
I haven’t watched MSNBC since they got rid of Alan Keyes many years ago. I hope they go the way of the Edsel.

Nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
I’m sure it failed because it wasn’t Liberal enough!
The last time msnbc made any sense - this guy was there. RIP Jerry.
Though, that's not the word I would use...more like cartoon...
Good point!
They can change their format all they want to, but until they learn how to authentically connect to their viewers, it will never succeed.
Glad Fox News came around when it did. MSNBC really went off the deep end. I doubt some of the newcomers would believe that Col. North was once a regular on MSNBC along with Gibby.
Actually, Michael Savage had a weekend afternoon show. It only lasted three weeks before they fired him.
But Alan Keyes did have a weeknight show for a year or two.
The financial health is largely due to long-term deals with cable and satellite operators to carry MSNBC, made when the network sold itself as a counterbalance to Fox News, said Derek Baine, Kagan analyst.
Of course, eventually you need an audience to present yourself as a counterbalance to anything. There are, to be sure, other minor problems:
To many fans, MSNBC's weakness isn't that it's liberal. It's that the network is boring.
Well, predictable, at least, which is almost the same thing if what you're after is novelty and sensation rather than news. This might be one reason why:
Many liberals feel MSNBC reflexively defends President Barack Obama when it could be challenging him, said Jeff Cohen, a former MSNBC producer and now an Ithaca College professor.
No fooling. The old critical putdown applies to the 0bama administration: it is both good and original; the problem is that what is good isn't original and what is original isn't good. That certainly applies to Middle East policy, for example, where the "everything Bush did was wrong" crowd ended up taking his drones and quadrupling down, applying their own loftily-presented pullout from Iraq and losing the country. Presenting this to an audience skeptical of both is a mighty tough sell: it turns out that there are hypocrisies too enormous for even a liberal to swallow.
And yes, "Our President right or wrong" is tedious and unworthy of free men and women, especially when that President is an arrogant, racist scold too absorbed in his golf game and his family vacations to keep the world from burning around him. Here "news through a liberal lens" has a gigantic blind spot - you can look at it, but you can't see anything through it. And true to the mindless lock-step of liberal doctrine, the solution is "more of the same!"
Congrats on the retirement !!!!
Much more fun watching the grand-niece!
I have seriously tried to watch that useless network dozens of times...zilch...there is a real late night feature that concerns max-security prisons and how they function....that is interesting. Their political shows, Maddow etal are unwatchable!
Msnbc along with nbc is little more than a propaganda tool of the dems.
I will not put it on my tv.
Not now not ever.
It’t been “fixed” for years in this household.
That button hasn’t been pushed since the OJ trial ended.
Easy - they need to bring in the old 'Air American' crew - the nuts from 'Current'... then let Al Gore and Micheal Moore run the place... go waaaaaaay liberal. I'm sure that will work.../s
Hire this guy to replace that capitalist running dog,Tingles, and ratings will skyrocket.
