The few times I use my Garmin, it is acceptable.

My main issue is it has trouble routing me via major roads. It tries to route me via shortcuts, even though I have set it for minimum time.

I need an update also. Is there a cost associated with update?

Yes, I’ve also had the problem of this stupid thing directing me through all sorts of side streets (often through unsavory neighborhoods), wasting phenomenal amounts of my time when a major thoroughfare was available. If you purchase one of the “MT” Garmins, it guarantees free lifetime map updates.

Likely $50 or so if not a "lifetime maps" version. I would not be confident an update would improve your routing either.

Depends on what model you bought, if you paid less than $100, you probably have to pay to update, about $80 I think, or maybe just but another one. I bought a model that was LMT, lifetime updates and traffic, about $185. I don’t use the traffic option. I’ve updated twice, still like it, but I did have to buy a memory sd thing for more memory, about $16.

You do realize how weird that sounds, don't you?
