There was a scene from the movie, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", where Mitty skateboards down a long, deserted road in Iceland, that seems to have spawned this activity.

It is NOT something to do on US roads where there may be traffic!

Um...no. My friends & I were luging in the mid-to-late 70s on custom skateboards. It wasn't hard to find restricted roadways where there was no traffic. Doing it where there was traffic was just plain dumb; parked cars were hazard enough. We invented 'luging' and others named it, but I have no knowledge of any movie that comes close to stimulating it other than Airborne...never saw SLWM...
