Why ARE today's stars so short? Actors were once strapping hunks and muscular specimens.

Actors were once strapping hunks, thick-thighed he-men who had only to arrive at a film premiere to make everyone’s eyes bulge.

These Adonises towered above lesser mortals and had their suits made specially for them because they were such muscular specimens.

That’s the way things were when the likes of John Wayne (6ft 4in), Gregory Peck (6ft 3in), Charlton Heston (6ft 3in) and Clint Eastwood (6ft 4in) were in their prime.

They were big men playing big characters, often on top of enormous horses or engaged in butch boxing bouts.

Compare that with the recent Oscars ceremony, when our own Eddie Redmayne was announced as winner of the Best Actor category for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. The audience members sitting near him leapt to their feet to applaud — and little Eddie was suddenly dwarfed.

The actress Cate Blanchett loomed over him — she looked so much bigger than him, he could have been her lunch. And yet Redmayne, at 5ft 10in, is one of the taller modern male stars.

because the old films could not hide as much things like height, the heights had to be real. Today, thanks to special effects, they can hide things like this

John Rhys –Davies is 6’1”……....

You kinda get used to all the special effects and make-up of monsters and things in movies today but to take an actor the size of John Rhys and turn him into a dwarf like they did in LOTR, I find simply amazing........

The confusion was not knowing what he was getting at.

Depending on the context of a conversation, “not much of a man” can mean that a man is effeminate, citified, metrosexual, cowardly, and in fact, that is generally what people mean when they say someone is not much of a man, or is unmanly.

Men lie about their height. Generally claim to be taller then they are.

What is it about women and their fixation with inches and pounds anyway?

Not the jump though. Steve’s good pal Bud Ekins was ‘stunt doubling’ and riding for that famous scene.

Recently saw some episodes of Friends where Tom Selleck guest starred.

He absolutely knocked the male Friends right off the screen. It was almost embarrassing.

One of the greatest actors of his era, Jimmy Cagney, was short.

It’s been well known by movie buffs for years that Steve only drove about 10% of the ‘Chase’ scenes in the movie...and in none of the scenes that could have killed him.

My mother used to tell of reading that some male stars would stand on a box when standing next to a taller female star

They called it a "manmaker." Someone on the set would call out, "Manmaker for so-and-so!" and they'd bring a box for the poor short actor to stand on.

Two words: Allan Ladd. But aside from him I can see the author's point.

The camera doesn't care about height. When I was in high school a local long time news anchor came by to give a talk. On TV he just seemed to be an average guy, probably would have guessed about 5'9 or so. In reality he was probably around 5'3" in lifts. His entire body was proportional, head, torso, legs, etc. but he was like a miniature version of a typical human male. Looked great on camera, especially sitting at the news anchor desk. But in person it was a completely different story.

And while some people have photogenic features that seem odd when you meet them, I was lucky enough one time to be standing behind Angelina Jolie in a Customs line at Heathrow Airport. She was pushing a stroller with one of her adopted children and had a rather large Brit with her, clearly as a security escort. She was surprisingly petite and clearly very tired. But even under airport customs zone fluorescent lighting and little or no makeup she was stunningly pretty.

What about that “netherworld” height for a man.....5’-11”? Is that considered tall or “normal” (average)?
