Actors were once strapping hunks, thick-thighed he-men who had only to arrive at a film premiere to make everyones eyes bulge.
These Adonises towered above lesser mortals and had their suits made specially for them because they were such muscular specimens.
Thats the way things were when the likes of John Wayne (6ft 4in), Gregory Peck (6ft 3in), Charlton Heston (6ft 3in) and Clint Eastwood (6ft 4in) were in their prime.
They were big men playing big characters, often on top of enormous horses or engaged in butch boxing bouts.
Compare that with the recent Oscars ceremony, when our own Eddie Redmayne was announced as winner of the Best Actor category for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. The audience members sitting near him leapt to their feet to applaud and little Eddie was suddenly dwarfed.
The actress Cate Blanchett loomed over him she looked so much bigger than him, he could have been her lunch. And yet Redmayne, at 5ft 10in, is one of the taller modern male stars.

That’s why Cruise is so good as Jack Reacher. Definitely manly, masculine and unself-conscious.
I worked with matt damon, shia lebouf and met Cruise at the studio more often. Buncha’ midgets.. Compared to Eastwood who towered over me.
I generally consider morality, loyalty and honor the measure of a man.
YMMV.
Ouch - I'm only 3'2" - but I've "got a great personality"....
Agreed.
And he couldn’t blame that whole “righty playing a lefty” kind of thing.
IIRC, they actually tailored reversed uniforms and flipped the negatives to make him look like a lefty.
Saw the movie before reading the book. It was decent. The book was much, much better, as usual. The best scenes though, had Gunny Cash in them.
I think the women are too tall:
6’ 1”
Brigitte Nielsen
6’
Geena Davis
Brooke Shields
Uma Thurman
Aisha Tyler
5’ 11½”
Sigourney Weaver
5’ 10½”
Nicole Kidman
Lucy Lawless

Now, that seems right, lol.
Considering the context of this thread, Hollywood, you could have been more clear about what you meant, you could even have been more specific than “not much of a man”, not all of us are up on the Hollywood gossip books that you read, or what you meant by using that wording rather than simply condemning him for his promiscuity.
If that is your first Reacher book, I envy you. You have hours of enjoyment ahead of you. Try to read them in order, though. Each book stands alone, mostly, but there is enough continuity to make it worthwhile to start at the beginning.
Lol
Alan Ladd and Audie Murphy were short. James Dean was short (5’7”). Bogey was 5’8”. But a lot of the actresses were shorter back then too. Now they are all runway model height.
#51 baby faces
You are correct. Many are soft and too feminine looking.
I do not want to see yet another actor with the carefully manicured weird beard and multi layered clothes topped by a wool cap. They just do not looked like they have lived a life outside of hollywood.
The actresses just do not have the look of those I see in older shows. I think with all the growth hormone drugs and botox they look frozen.

I just haven't gone back to the series. I have several little-known writers I'm reading now. Sci-fi stuff. Pretty darn good. One is Sara King. I've read her Zero series (Forging Zero, Zero Recall, Zero's Return, and another related short story called The Moldy Dead). They're great stories. Excellent character development.
If you like SciFi, give “Macroscope” by Piers Anthony a look. It’s an oldie but a goodie.
Pretty dang shallow.
I hope all stork women dry up and die alone.
If Obama had good character, we wouldn't be in such a mess.
6′ 1″ Vin Diesel

6′ 3½ Will Ferrell
