PINE BUSH - An effort to celebrate national Foreign Language Week by reading the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic Wednesday has polarized Pine Bush High School into angry factions.
The morning's regularly scheduled announcements included the Arabic reading of the pledge. According to students, the announcement was greeted by catcalls and angry denunciations in classrooms throughout the school by students who felt the reading was inappropriate.
The reading became the subject of angry talk throughout the school and a cascade of tweets both from students who criticized the reading and those who supported it.
The controversy has "divided the school in half," according to school Superintendent Joan Carbone. She described the reading as "something that was supposed to be good but turned out not to be."
Early Wednesday afternoon, high school Principal Aaron Hopmayer made a building-wide announcement explaining the reading's context and apologizing to students who took offense.
The apology appears to have done little to quell the situation; it may, in fact, have fueled resentment from students who feel the reading was appropriate.

The public education system is worthless.
Stupid administrators ....making six figures.
No one will be held responsible. Idiots.
Offensive?
Offensive doesn’t quite cover it.
Reciting in in anything other than English is Profoundly Offensive.
“I pledge allegiance to the black flag
“Of the Prophet Mohammed & his Shahada.
“And to the Koran for which it stands,
“One Caliphate under Allah,
“With murder and mayhem for all you infidels!
Wrong. It is the most valuable tool of the communists and progressives trying to destroy the Republic and the Constitution.
NY state?
They probably thought it would be appropriate due to the thousands of Arabic students attending.
I have no problem with it, as long as when they got to the “one nation under God” part they said “Isahu akhbar, Death to Islam!...”
But they probably didn’t and put us under Allah instead.
Don’t they have foreign language classes in high schools?
Isahu akhbar, Death to Islam!...
Amen!
Well, I meant it’s of no use to anyone who actually want their children to learn.
I’d have no problem with this...
IF
It were a word -for- word translation, without any islamic crap thrown in.
And they do it in every other language that is taught in the school or spoken by students who attend.
And crap like this is why the country will be better off if we just get them all out of here now before we’re dealing with what Europe is.
This burns me up!
I went on a rampage when I discovered most classrooms in elementary schools don’t have American flags to display.....never mind, that the teachers don’t do the Pledge as part of the opening exercises. I called around and a local VFW donated the flags for the school and installed them gratis....but still the teachers chose not to do the Pledge. GRRRRR!
I know many on FR don’t believe in the Pledge or respect for the Flag....but I still do.
I believe so.
I thought for sure it was going to be an Arabic class that did this. Alas it was the entire student body.......why are these schools becoming so dumb?
As a kid going to movies on army posts, before the matinee they would show Old Glory waving and play the Star Spangled Banner, and you stood and put your hand over your heart, unless you wanted to be asked to leave as well as get your butt kicked.
We sang the Ballad of the Green Berets by Barry Sadler in music class and every day at 5 pm, when they played taps, you stopped your car and got out, got off your bike, stopped walking, faced the garrison flag ... so you’re preaching to the choir buddy.
Anyone who won’t pay respect to the flag of this great nation can get the he** out, or be driven out as far as I’m concerned, and with no exceptions.
Yes.
