The City of Kitchener has closed part of Stauffer Drive so that a colony of salamanders can cross safely from one side of the street to the other.
Jefferson salamanders, which live in the forests on either side of the road, are protected under Ontario's Endangered Species Act because their populations are in decline across the province.
In Kitchener, the salamanders that live in the Doon South area face one particular threat: traffic.

Make fun all you want of the amphibians but...
the average salamander has more documentation
AND integrity than anyone in the White Mosque.
Salamanders... less slimy than most politicians.
I’m crazy about salamanders. They are just adorable. Glad they are being protected.
Daggone it, you’re supposed to ping FReepers when their name comes up in the conversation.
LOL!
Love that!
My local Eastern Spotteds have been all but wiped out by traffic.
They cross in one 100 foot wide spot on top of the mountain every spring and even though it’s not like they dart out into traffic, people just don’t bother to avoid smashing them.
In my younger days, I went up for the event and carried them across.
One night, when I was about 35 or so, a scary guy stopped while I was toting them and I have not been back, since.
I suddenly realized I was alone, miles from anyone else and had only a bucket and flashlight to defend myself.
Too many outlanders coming through, now.
:(
Hey!
She did!
I’m here!
Why, thank you.
I remember some place building a “turtle bypass” for a highway...
ah... found it... a 3.4 million dollar turtle tunnel
http://www.wcjb.com/local-news/2009/06/34-million-federal-stimulus-money-pay-turtle-tunnel
I’d rather my tax dollars go to turtles than illegal aliens, any day.
Couldn’t they put crossing guard there for a brief period?
Why don’t they just build a colvert under the street and put barriers on either side.
And I thought somebody got burned on one of those industrial broilers...
In a similar vein (and before I was born) my husband was once in a very rural place and there was some idiot firing a shotgun at swallows who were nested under an I-80 overpass. Mr. Megan went to ask the jerk to stop and the jerk aimed the shotgun at Mr. Megan.
The swallows were much safer after that.
Pretty much agree....but I’d bet there were cheaper alternatives.
Shame we don’t make better use of salamanders. Millions could be trained as caudata processors.
Nope, apparently not.
I tried.
