From the time he broke into the majors in 1963 until he retired in 1986, Rose amassed 4,256 hits (1st all- time), 746 doubles (2nd all-time) and 2,165 runs (fifth all-time). He played for three World Series Champions, and was named the MVP of the 1975 Series. Those are un-godly numbers. They are the numbers of a Hall of Famer.

Unfortunately, he also ignored Major League Baseball's Rule 21 (d)

Rule 21 (d) is posted on the clubhouse door in every major league stadium, and has been for years. Rose probably walked by those signs 5,000 times during his career.

Rule 21 (d), which states: d) BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

It doesn't say... unless you've got 4000 hits or 700 home runs or won 300 games or have 3000 strike outs. It says ANY PLAYER....He chose to ignore the signs, he chose to bet on baseball, and he's being punished in accordance with the rule. He also chose to lie about his actions for 14 years, and even after acknowledging them, still doesn't seem to understand that his mistake wasn't failing to apologize sooner. It's that he bet on baseball in the first place. How gutless.

And you don’t think others did as well? Time for baseball to get its head out of the sand and acknowledge Rose’s accomplishments. Baseball has let others in with far worse problems.

Rose's only mistake was that he wasn't a black basketball player who was up to his neck in gambling debt. He could have easily retired from the sport, joined a minor league baseball team for a year then returned to basketball, everything forgotten..........

Rose's stats can't be ignored, he deserves to be in the Hall...........

It’s a slippery slope. Once you lower standards for Rose, then where do you draw the line. Do the rules only apply to players that are not Hall of Fame material?

Seems like there are two major opinions here. Some say that Pete was such a great player that he deserves to be in baseball and deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame. These people are saying you should only consider his performance on the field.

Others say that he broke one of the biggest rules in baseball by gambling on baseball, and the penalty for that is expulsion from the game.

Over the years the basic arguments haven’t changed.

I was in the stands the night that Pete Rose made his major league debut. I saw hit stroke his first major league hit.

He also broke rule 21 (d). A rule he was responsible for enforcing. A rule he knew he was breaking.

Pete Rose was a great baseball player. But he is no Hall of Famer.

If Obama adhered to the law, the way Major League Baseball does, there would be no Immigration Crisis.

Sorry Charlie Hustle. You broke the Rules. There are no Participation Trophies in Baseball, nor allowances made for those who break the rules.

Pete Rose is in every thinking fans hall of fame.
Perhaps he should never be able to work in the MLB for what he did.

But his performance as a player was in the top ten of all time. He did not disgrace himself as a player.

Therefore he more that deserves to be in the HOF You can ban him from any future monetary connection with MLB but the HOF ‘IS’ Pete Rose.

Every baseball fan that is worthy of being called a baseball fan knows about Rose and will pass that on. It doesn’t matter if he will ever get in.

The reason the baseball hall is better than other halls of fame, even for all its flaws, is because they care enough about it enough to not have a rule that requires a minimum number inducted every year. That and things like not inducting Rose only add to the worth of actually getting in. Any other sport/endeavor he would have probably been in a while ago, in my opinion.

How about admit the guy to the Hall for his legit accomplishments, but continue to ban him from earning money related to baseball employment? Seems equitable , since his playing career easily earned the spot, whereas his post-player days behavior similarly earned him an employment ban.

FYI, I don’t like the SOB and never have, but his numbers are the stuff of legend. If they let the steroid aholes in, why not Rose?

No matter what records Rose holds, he will not be let into the Hall.
He did the one thing you cannot do in baseball. It is the cardinal rule after the Black Sox incident.
You cannot bet on games as a player or coach, ESPECIALLY betting on your own team.

Three years after he retired, Rose agreed to a permanent ban from baseball amid accusations he gambled on games while playing and managing for the Cincinnati Reds.

End of story, IMHO.

Pete gambled when he knew it was against the rules. Pete got caught gambling.

Apparently, Pete still thinks the rules don't apply to him.

Good ballplayer. A total idiot as an individual.
