DALLAS (AP) The deaths of three people who developed a foodborne illness linked to some Blue Bell ice cream products has prompted the Texas icons first product recall in its 108-year history.
Five people, in all, developed listeriosis in Kansas after eating products from one production line at the Blue Bell creamery in Brenham, Texas, according to a statement Friday from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), also a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), stated that all five of the sickened individuals, including the three who have died (60% mortality rate) were receiving treatment at the same Kansas hospital before developing the listeriosis, suggesting their infections with the Listeria bacteria were nosocomial (acquired, while eating the products, in the hospital). That might also help to explain the higher mortality rate in these cases (60%, versus the more normal 20%-30%): the people, who were all older (three of the five were women) were already hospitalized.[13][14][15]
HMMMM, the only people affected were those who were already patients in the same hospital. I’ll have a pint of triple chocolate please.
No, it’s not unionized. It’s a Texas family owned company. Their ice cream used to be the BEST and everyone was beside themselves when it came to their town but in recent years they’ve cut back on quality so much it’s no better than store brand except still double the price.
The source of the contamination has been traced to a machine at Blue Bell.
The CDC? Isn't that the outfit headed by hussien's "Lean Forward" stooge? You were still in Texas, eastforker, when the obola outbreak occurred and that CDC crony botched the whole thing. I just can't trust that outfit nor the HHS 'RAT bureaucrats.
That said, it's quite possible that the killer ice cream product was limited only to that Kansas hospital. Maybe Blue Bell is off the hook? I sure hope so since they're a Texas tradition.
One store brand that I've found to be good is Goldenbrook from Brookshires.
This is bad!
BlueBell was great ice cream.
Who are their major competitors?
This could be industrial sabotage.
If you are price sensitive, you wouldn’t be shopping at Publix, anyway. They are my stop for premium items when I am in their market area (they don’t serve this part of the world), but if you want to save money, you need to stick to Aldi and WalMart.
Sounds plausible to me. Don't have to think this one thru very far to see how such a thing could happen...
But hey, undocumented workers will work for half of an American's wage. /s just in case it's really needed.
I live and work in Northern California, but at the last Company I was at our CEO (a former Texas Aggie) flew in some Blue Bell Ice Cream for a Company party. It was great. I can’t find it here, and I can’t quite see flying it in for my own personal use (I checked their website - it is an option, but I’d have to eat a lot more ice cream than I should to make the shipment practical), but it is excellent ice cream.
Tainted Blue Bell products were also found in South Carolina and Texas.
All the markets in this area sell Blue Bell but I never buy it as it is one of the most expensive.
Once, one of the supermarkets advertised it on sale. I bought a half gallon just to try it. Personally, I did not care for it. Not awful but no better than the cheaper brands and not quite as good as a couple of them.
One of my Grand children’s school in Oklahoma made a field trip to their local Blue Bell plant. They gave them all they could eat and even gave them extra so the other kids at the school could have some too. I thought that was really nice of them.
Anywho...sort of related: Haagen-Dazs Mint Chip gives me migraines that would keep me in bed for three days at a time. Needless to say, I had to drop my half-pint-a-day habit which has been a good thing in so many ways!
There's no doubt in my mind that the far-left is 100% behind this. Liberals force companies to hire filthy illegals who have no culture where hygiene is regarded. Recall that Jessie Jackson used to spit in the food to get back at white people. To destroy a company, sabotage of this sort is easy for the regime to mastermind. A major competitor is the New England commie outfit, Ben and Jerry's which will benefit by the death of Blue Bell and translate to increased funding for the socialist causes they champion.
Walmart is 22 miles away......Publix is 3 miles away. Aldi I tried....once and only once.
YUCK!
TG we have wonderful locally made ice cream here, and you can watch them making it right there through a big window!
Can’t wait ‘til they open up for the season.
C’mon up to Newport Oregon: we have Tillamook and Umpqua ice cream. Umpqua’s French Vanilla and Chocolate Brownie Thunder are positively decadent.
You obviously don’t live in Texas. This is a wonderful family owned company who has been around forever. Glad you don’t like it - will be more for the rest of us. As a matter of fact, the local Kroger had it for $4.44 for half a gallon this week and we bought 6 half gallons. Hopefully will last us and the grandsons at least until the middle of April.
I don’t believe they’re unionized. Tainted product came from one machine, which has been shut down. People that died were in the hospital. Did they already have compromised immune systems?
Just stay away from the Homicidal Vanilla.
Blue Bell is comparable in quality to Baskin-Robbins.
