>> Germans do tend to yodel <<
And what does that have to do with this thread?
The Trapps were Austrians and, in my experience, Austrians get very unhappy if you call them Germans.
Especially if you call them Germans in Austrian.
“Austrians get very unhappy if you call them Germans.”
Was that before or after they invited Hitler in to play?
Oh, dear God! I made a booboo. Perhaps all the yodelers I’ve seen were really Austrians.
Difference without distinction. The differences are at best, academic. Although there is some truth to the idea that Germans get blamed for the bad things Austria brings to the world. (But I do like Glocks, and Red Bull)
They live in one of the two main states formed from the German nation.
Up to 150 years ago, Austria was the leading German state. It wasn't until Prussia won several wars that it took that position away from Austria, kicked Austria out of the German "nation," and became Germany.
If the same criteria had been applied to the German nation that was applied to the Italian nation, then Austria would have been part of the German state.
...Austrians get very unhappy if you call them Germans.

:) I am currently researching my ancestors, and I remembered being told by my mother that my father’s maternal grandfather was born in Bavaria, around 1863, and that he bristled when called German. Actually, he referred to himself as Prussian.
