A high school honor roll student encouraged her friend to kill himself before raising thousands of dollars for suicide prevention, according to authorities.
Michelle Carter, 18, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Conrad Roy III, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his idling truck in Fairhaven, Massachusetts last July.
When Roy texted Carter that he wasn't sure he should take his life and had climbed out of the vehicle, she allegedly texted him: 'Get back in.'
Carter, who was 17 at the time of Roy's suicide, was indicted on February 5 and arraigned on an involuntary manslaughter charge the next day in New Bedford Juvenile Court.

Absolutely chilling to read about how she texted her boyfriend to "get back inside the car" when he decided that he did not want to kill himself after all. Apparently these texts are real as she has been criminally charged and is looking at 20 years in jail.
After his death, the woman then clamored to have herself involved in online fundraisers for the boys family and accused a friend (who started a fundraiser) of "taking credit for her idea."
A classic case of "pay attention to me, I'm special".
This is the dark side of social media. A lot of young adults out there are obsessed with getting themselves noticed on social media. I think that's why we are seeing such a drastic increase in weirdness, such as boys wanting to come to school dressed as girls. It's a way to get them noticed and get them famous in social media circles.
No, she should be hung. Or suffocated. Then spread all over social media to what happens to those that lead impressionable people to their deaths.
Disgusting. No mercy.
Munchausen by proxy?
femme fatale of the highest honor ... one bullet resolution
After 20 years in solitary confinement to figure out why what she did was wrong.
We, as a society have been boojitted into thinking some people "deserve" some kind of "justice" and the truth is ... some people need to end
Just stop
And that ain't gonn'a happen without a bullet
“the dark side of social media”
No.
Humans can have a dark side. Social media is an inert object and is neither good nor bad. It can be used for good or for bad.
Human nature can go either way: the right way or the way of perversion. This creature is a perfect example of the result of liberalism which destroys natural human values
That’s a ridiculous charge! “Manslaughter by text!” ... LOL ...
A good lawyer is going to get ANYONE off such a stupid charge as “Manslaughter by text”!
If I text or post to someone, “Why don’t you go out and hang yourself and do the world a favor!” ... only an idiot for a prosecutor is going to try and bring a charge and any good lawyer will get that overturned!
I don’t care how much of an boorish girl that is ... because I see plenty of those boorish types on Free Republic too, but I don’t advise “bringing charges” against them.
These people in government positions sure going CRAZY with their power in their positions!
I guess it never occurred to her that her dead boyfriend would be found with his phone, and that her encouragement would be right there for everyone to see.
Oops.
You’re right there is NO DARK SIDE to social media ... BUT ... there is a very DARK SIDE to human beings!
The context matters. He was in a car, in the act of committing suicide, with the motor running, and then he started to back out, and she encouraged him to go through with it. That’s a bit like yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. It’s different, I think, from me telling someone on FR to go shoot themselves because their position on Ukraine is so stupid (or whatever).
I would have texted back, “F you B——, I ain’t dying for you!”
That's a good point. Liberalism is all about proclaiming to be "for something" publicly while doing the opposite privately. Kind of like the limousine liberals who cheer rent control and Section 5 housing projects but they personally live in the tony suburbs like Greenwich, CT and Weston, MA, where that would never be allowed. In fact, those towns even setup one-way streets at the borders so that it is difficult for "riff-raff" to easily come into their precious towns.
So in this case, we have this young woman, who in private encouraged her friend to commit suicide, publicly speaking against suicide and raising money for "suicide prevention."
This is so Orwellian. And evil.
She couldn't just do handstands in a bikini?
Yeah, sure ... We can start adding all these other crimes to texting!
Go and rob a bank! Go and shoot someone. Go and rob a guy in the park. ... LOL ...
Then we can get a new slogan going for these liberals ... “Texting kills” ... and we can institute all sorts of government restrictions on texting, that you have to get a license before you text, and you can’t text until you’re at least 18 years old, you have to have at least 20 hours of training before you text ...
Sorry ... I’ve had enough of the LIBERAL MENTALITY! ... :-) ...
Whoa, vampire teeth!
So this is not your typical "Do the world a favor and hang yourself" insult, which all reasonable people would see as metaphorical and not take literally. In this case, this woman was taking active role here.
It also plays into human decency. Here on Free Republic, we get into it quite a bit and in the heat of argument, we say things we later regret and usually apologize for. But it would take a really nasty and despicable person to come on to a "Pray for my Wife" thread and tell that husband that you hope she dies soon and why don't you just go ahead and pull the plug on her.
I'm thinking that person would instantly earn a lifetime banishment from Free Republic.
She’s a stupid and despicable person. I’ve seen the stupid and despicable posters on Free Republic too.
But “Manslaughter by Text” is not only an IDIOTIC charge but something that sounds like it came from “The Onion” or Saturday a Night Live!
The prosecutor’s office there must allow “smoking on the job” ... LOL ...
She is a cold-blooded demon.
This is the dark side of social media.
Here is another example of the dark side of social media.

Another example is how social media was used to overthrow the Egyptian government.
