Apple Watch will replace your car keys, says Tim Cook

Apple Watch will replace your car keys, says Tim Cook

Exclusive interview: The Apple chief executive reveals to Allister Heath how the revolutionary features in the company's smartwatch could forever alter our daily lives.

Like millions of people, Tim Cook stopped wearing a watch a while back. The Apple boss no longer needed one: his iPhone told the time just fine. There was just one problem, as he readily acknowledges in his interview with The Telegraph: glancing at one's wrist can be a very useful way to find out information. It is less rude and less intrusive.

So Apple now wants to pull off something that no company has ever managed before: it wants to reverse a cultural trend that it had created itself. It wants us to start wearing a watch again.

The big event on 9 March will showcase the Apple Watch; and it will be launched to consumers in April. Cook, needless to say, is already wearing his new Apple Watch. He couldn't even contemplate living without it anymore, he says.

"I'm now so used to getting all my notifications and all my messages," he says. "It's so incredible just to do this."

Reinventing the wrist watch

The Telegraph had a peek at two watches, one worn by Cook and the other by another senior member of staff. Three versions will be available to consumers; the two we saw seemed to be the Sport edition. One had a dark wristband; Cook's had a white one.

• Apple Watch: everything you need to know

The watch's screen boasts all of the usual Apple interface, but the icons are rounder than those of an iPhone, presumably to match the watches' shape. The first reason to buy the watch will be as a fashion statement and for its striking design.

And it ran the best calculator Language ever - RPN, stack-based post-fix. Nothing ever matched it.

Absolutely. I bought a 45 when they first came out. Expensive, for sure, but it lasted many years before it died. There's a bit of a learning curve with RPN, but once you got over that, you could fly through complex calculations with confidence. Now, even for simple stuff, it feels unnatural and counterintuitive to use a calculator with an equals key.

You don’t need a key (or iWatch - semiconductor was invented in 1958) to start your 57 Chevy :)

From the article:
October 2014

Cook comes out as gay in an article for Bloomberg Busnessweek.
"I'm proud to be gay, and consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me," he wrote.

Well isn't that special! -- Churchlady

Back in my day when a CEO of a major company announced that he was gay, and then went on to say that sodomy was a “gift from God” they would have been fired the very next day because everyone would have considered it extremely offensive and blasphemous. His head would have burst into flames and that's the way it was and we liked it!

Thanks for the comments and PING! I have been surprised at how much I use my Gear 2 watch. Since I use it to monitor my sleep and daily activity... other than when it is charging or when I am working on our old cars or on our old airplane it almost never comes off my wrist.

There are now many “smart watches” and activity monitors that are on the market. The first time we saw such a device was this last September at the Western Washington Fair. One of the volunteers from the Air Force Museum who helped us with our Display honoring Vietnam Veterans was wearing an activity tracker. His doctor recommended it to him and he said that it was very helpful for making sure he was met his daily activity goals. My wife got the idea to find me something similar from his example. His device was strictly an activity monitor my wife thought that I would appreciate a device that had more functionality.

We have been getting a lot of glimpses at the Apple Watch for the past couple of months. I am very curious as to how Apple’s entry into this segment of the market will change the way that these devices are perceived. I am glad that the two of you have now commented because I consider the two of you to be the most knowledgeable on all things Apple.

That is a truly amazing watch! A friend of mine when I was still working on the fire department wore something similar but with a few less bells and whistles, but his also wound itself from daily motion.

That does look like a cool watch ... but you know what? ... a developer will come out with an app that looks EXACTLY like this on the Apple Watch ... :-) ...

It’s like my HP-12C that I have in my briefcase ... I’ve got one EXACTLY like it on my iPad, with all the very same functionality! ... :-) ...

I’ve got one neighbor to the south of me that is of the PAGAN religion, whatever that is, and a neighbor to the north of me that is a Satanist. AND the neighbor to the south is in the medical supply business shipping out to the stores around here. I’m sure I’ve purchased their products.

Then the neighbor to the north works at an airline parts manufacturer that sells to major airlines. I do believe I’ve flown on planes with their gear, because they all have it.

Then there is the QuikTrip that I go to to get gas from ... and I know there’s an atheist there along with a few liberals behind the counter!

On top of that, Oh Boy! was I shocked to come across a guy working at Walmart that I know from running across him before that he’s in a Section 8 housing project and he’s so drugged up half the time I see him I don’t know how he ever got to work at Walmart!

You can’t go ANYWHERE in this country, get any particular kind of food, buy a particular car, get some gas, have an oil change, rent from an apartment or buy from a broker a place to live, talk to a phone rep for a utility company, get tech support for any product WITHOUT running into every conceivable person you can even imagine!

Even our PRESIDENT is a MUSLIM ... LOL ...
