I disagree with you here. I believe Putin cares about power. Despite many praising him he hasn’t really been that good for Russia.
Putin was given power at the time when painful economic reforms had been done and oil price started to rise. Economy was already growing with year 1999 showing 6.4% GDP growth - first year to show growth before the fall of USSR. Putin was then blessed with a record oil price boom and the oil fueled growth continued.
He didn’t manage to achieve Russia building a solid economy though. It remained totally dependent on oil. I don’t think economy even interests him that much. What he managed was to get rid of most of the recently instituted freedoms so now his tightly controlled press was of course singing hosannas to supposed genius of Putin. Removing freedom secures his personal power, but I would say it is very bad for Russia. For putting what is good for him before what is good for his country makes him a bad statesman.

Russia will be allying with our enemies like they always have.
North Korea, China, Iran, the Russians will continue doing what they do, be the bad guys.

The 'choice' is , simple as I can make it is, a Ukrainian farmer is ordered to join a collective as all the other Russians have. He refuses. They take away his 'produce'. He and his family starves as do all the Ukrainians in the cities. Millions they say. Pick your number.
If they accepted to join, they would be no better or worse than the average Russian. But they would not all be dead.
The despicable Nazis gave the Jews no choice. They were to be gassed, no matter what they did.
To me that's a small but important distinction. It makes me believe that Hitler was far more evil than Stalin in comparing those two events.
