I agree that Putin is not a friend of the U.S., but you’re full of it if you say he does not care about Russia.

I disagree with you here. I believe Putin cares about power. Despite many praising him he hasn’t really been that good for Russia.

Putin was given power at the time when painful economic reforms had been done and oil price started to rise. Economy was already growing with year 1999 showing 6.4% GDP growth - first year to show growth before the fall of USSR. Putin was then blessed with a record oil price boom and the oil fueled growth continued.

He didn’t manage to achieve Russia building a solid economy though. It remained totally dependent on oil. I don’t think economy even interests him that much. What he managed was to get rid of most of the recently instituted freedoms so now his tightly controlled press was of course singing hosannas to supposed genius of Putin. Removing freedom secures his personal power, but I would say it is very bad for Russia. For putting what is good for him before what is good for his country makes him a bad statesman.
