Guidelines that told millions of people to avoid butter and full-fat milk should never have been introduced, say experts.
The startling assertion challenges advice that has been followed by the medical profession for 30 years.
The experts say the advice from 1983, aimed at reducing deaths from heart disease, lacked any solid trial evidence to back it up.
The guidelines the first of their kind were introduced when as much as one-fifth of the average British diet was saturated fat such as butter, cream and fattier cuts of meat.
Britons were advised by an official dietary committee to cut their fat intake to 30 per cent of total energy and saturated fat intake to 10 per cent, while increasing the amount of carbohydrate they ate.
This led food makers to create low-fat spreads, including cholesterol-lowering products, while consumers shunned cheese, milk and cream.
However, now some scientists even say the advice is responsible in part for the obesity crisis because it encouraged an increase in carbohydrate in our diets.
A new review says evidence from trials did not support the advice. It says it is incomprehensible that such advice was introduced for 56million Britons in 1983 and 220million Americans six years earlier given the contrary results from a small number of unhealthy men.

Lard is also good for you. Really.
I’ve gotten to the point where I ignore food studies. In my 60 years studies have found conclusive evidence that, say, eggs are bad, oops, eggs are good, bad, good, bad...I’m not sure where conclusive, settled science is today on eggs and I don’t care. But I know what goes good with eggs, bacon...oops, bacon bad, good, bad, good...
Happy to hear this.
My kid is 3.5, and will eat butter off a spoon if I let her.
I let her.
This is an article by a science denier. Dietary fat is settled science with no more discussion allowed. (/s)
All I can say is these are the same people that want us to stop driving, halt economic growth, stop using oil and gas and crawl into caves because of a falsified set of modeled data stating it might be getting 0.00001 degree warmer in 100 years.
shunning cheese? - Banish the thought....there is nothing closer to heaven than a nice room temp romano with a crust of bread and a glass of wine
I never fell for “butter is bad” for us crapola.
Who in the heck would want to consume margarine?
and I can agree with you - but.....caloric availability is nothing like it was 100 years ago - and while these fats may be good for us after all, I’m of the mind that given the availability of calories in todays diet, we ought to be a bit more discreet in our consumption over all
All my wife and I use except for deep frying ,both of our "cholesterol" test levels have come down ,over the last few years of use.
poached with toast - oh god - 5x a week. Hard boiled - I love em EXCEPT egg salad....wth
In the last week I’ve read articles that say butter isn’t really bad for us, there was no big bang and all those times I was told I was an idiot for not believing may have been a mistake, and the center of the earth is laying sideways.... typical week for science I guess.
You know what the egg “study” was based on? Using powdered eggs from WWII, I think on vets in VA hospitals, for a few years towards the end of the war. POWDERED EGGS! They didn’t mention that until until the whole thing was debunked in the late 90s. That is “food science” for you. I’m an RN, and I do not listen to these food claims.
+1
I fell for the crap as well, no more...
I made the mistake of actually trusting these so called “scientists” who are nothing more than activists wearing white smocks.
I’ll eat and drink what I want, when I want...
Same here. Grew up eating a lot of dairy and drinking huge amounts of whole milk.
Just now getting ready for a breakfast of eggs fried in butter, fried potatoes, bacon, and sweet buttered toast with half and half in my coffee. Finishing with a cigarette or two.
In late 60’s with no cholesterol problems.
Life is good.
;>)
Sugar is what’s bad for you.
LOLOLOLOL.
I ate 4 friend eggs in butter this morning!
God bless and keep you.
It was really hard to believe that the “butter substitutes” could possibly be better for you.
So, I ignored them and continued eating butter. It sure tastes better!
