Did Border Crisis Trigger Measles Outbreak?

The sudden outbreak of measles across the United States raises questions about how the disease arrived in the country after it was eradicated here in 2000.

A quick review of the U.S. State Department visa requirements for immigrant visas reveals that applicants must be vaccinated for measles prior to their approval. Measles vaccination is not required for tourist visas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nor is it required for any other disease.

That leaves three possibilities. One is that a tourist present legally in the U.S. brought measles to the country while visiting. This is the most plausible explanation, given that the outbreak began at Disneyland.

Another possibility is that an illegal immigrant brought measles to the country.

And the third, probably most remote, possibility is that a legal immigrant who was vaccinated still managed to contract the disease abroad, since the vaccination is not 100% effective in all cases.

“Lawrence Solomon: Vaccines can’t prevent measles outbreaks”

Does Lawrence explain how deaths from measles worldwide decreased by 75% between 2000 to 2013? Reported cases of measles globally are also down by 75%. Almost 85% of children around the world now receive a measles vaccine before their first birthday. Yeah, the vaccine doesn't work. Fewer outbreaks = fewer reported case = fewer deaths. Damn those vaccine makers. Damn them to hell.

Did quote mining bite you in the ass again?

You do it a lot. Do you do it for a desired effect or because you never bother to read your links?

Non sequiter, try again.

If Thompson wasn’t afraid of consequences of admitting his data was mungled for political reasons, why’d he lawyer up?

And reassure me that you’ve gotten your adult MMR booster. Lately in fact. I’d hate for you, too, to be the one whose booster had worn off and ended up being the unvaccinated you were hating on.

I would also be surprised if any measles deaths happen at all this year, if not more than single-digits. I agree on daycare, because not just measles, but all sorts of diseases such as noroviruses can spread to a child at daycare. Also, measles isn’t contagious without the outward symptoms, so if you have a rash and coughs, stay home and get better!
