I just re-joined FR and I would like to post to my local NC state board but I am not able to. How do I get the ability to do that?

Or do yourself a big favor, blow Windoze away and install Linux.

Well, that may be harder in the short term but you’ll be much happier in the long run.

I don’t know anything about Linux, though I have a nephew who swears by it. If it’s something I have to buy, there is no way it’s going to happen.

They’re from the “Good Morning Kitten” website.

Not my kitties or puppy. We talked at one time about doing a web series about our dragons, but none of the highly technical teens actually picked up the baton.

It’s time for Pat to program. I’m going to Simpson’s produce stand to see if they have cantaloupe. The ones at Walmart yesterday were crummy. If Simpson’s don’t have any I like, I’ll go up to Bill’s Harris Teeter and also to the GNC next door for kelp capsules.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

I have to get new wiper blades asap. I went to use them this morning for the dust and pollen that have been blown around the last few days, and they were both leaving big streaks and puddles.

And my box fan is dying, if not dead. It is on Medium, but I can barely feel a breeze from less than six feet away.

Simpson’s had canteloupes. I also bought some half-price tomatoes that are starting to go bad. I’ll make soup with them, and some celery and onions and garlic.

I saw cantaloupes this morning at Walmart, but the ones I’ve gotten in the past have been green. I didn’t even bother to check.

Ungh. I just had a breathing treatment and now I have the shakes. DANG! I hate that.

It’s not even 0900 and already the A/C is cycling, and the thermostat is at 85. *it’s the fan’s fault!*

Linux is free, as is the support. There are few if any viruses to attack it since everyone focuses on attacking Windoze.

But, because support is free, sometimes you have to work at something to get it working.

You can find out some more at http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/the-best-linux-distros-currently-available/ but forgive the editing of the article.

How much different is it than Win 8.1 to navigate in? I’m afraid of the unfamiliarity of different screens, and the confusion that comes with learning new things (not easy with CFIDS.) CFIDS has a built-in learning disability, so I couldn’t be trained for a new job and couldn’t go to school. It sucks to be a PWC (Person With CFIDS)

I really hate fighting with Win 8.1 and think it should never have been released on the general public.

Is there a manual I can get that has a tutorial or better yet, everything I need to know?

There are probably lots of books including for-dummies versions. I would say nearly every Linux distribution (distro in geek-speak) is easier to work with than Windows-from-hell - er - I mean - Windows 8.1.

Linux was originally command-line only but there are lots of versions with windowing environments and there are lots of them that will load on standard PC hardware without any intervention from you. They will also tend to set up their Internet, including wi-fi without you having to peak under the hood.

If you need Microsoft Office, you’re basically tanked, but a lot of people use Open Office (free) and are very happy with that. You would probably have to learn a new email client.

I’m pretty good with these things so I’m not your best source, but I would say that moving to various flavors of Linux is no harder than moving to Mac and MUCH easier than moving to 8.1.

linux.com recommends the following top 3 distributions for people new to Linux:

Ubuntu
Linux Mint
Linux Deepin

They compared user-friendliness, common apps, and a modern interface. They said you can’t go wrong with any of the three.

I don’t use MS Office. I loathe it. I use OpenOffice.org and have for years. MS doesn’t like that, and tries to default to MS Office, but I won’t let it.

Is Linux similar to Win 7?

I will go to the library tomorrow and see what I can find, as well as check Amazon for a Dummies book before I make the change. Thanks for the info! :o]

Problem is that Face has a brandynew WinAte tablet-laptop-whatever-thing. Rooting it, er I mean doing anything other than what HP did will immediately void her warranty. Considering the issues she has had lately doing anything that voids the warranty is not a good idea.

Once the warranty expires you can play.. ;-)

There’s no “one” Linux. It’s an open-source kernel on which many communities have built suites of tools and user interfaces. That’s why linux.com recommended 3 for new users.

There’s something out there close enough to W7 or even WXP to satisfy anyone, but you have to have at least a little sense of adventure because it will never be as easy as buying a PC with the OS pre-loaded.
