the town of Karasjok, in Finnmark County, temperatures dropped to minus 45.2 degrees Celcius on Sunday. On Monday it was still minus 42 in the morning. Although all school buses stopped running, schools were still open for those who were able to get there.
- Outside temperatures will have to be much lower before we close the schools, says school administrator Petter Asbjørn Balto to NRK.
- If it is 50 below or colder, the students may choose whether or not they want to go to school, Balto says
“We should keep in mind these values are in Celsius.”
Back in the days when I had to hike _____ miles/kilometers to school through the blizzard snows....
And I didn't have an iPhone either.
Barefoot in the snow...really?
This morning...5:46 AM we’re at one degree with a real feel of minus 10. I can feel the change in the air here from last night. With snow of six inches coming in Sunday. No fun since we still have crusty snow from this last storm!
I remember walking to school when it was so cold your knees were red raw by the time you got there....prickled and itched as you warmed up.
I believe at -40 Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal.
- 49.36 Farenheit. (seems Closer than 32 F and 0 C but F and C meet at -40 )
-40 is where the scales cross.
-40F = -40C
The C and F scales meet at -40. Each step of 1C is the equivalent of a step of 1.8F. They’re talking about -50C, or -58F before “optional” cancellation of classes.
Obviously they have a more robust idea of what winter garb is than we USA wimps who call it off at a balmy 0F.
Science!
Uphill both ways actually meant you climbed then descended a hill. Used to be able to sled on the way down.
At - 40 the two scales converge....
How do people even feed themselves and stay warm in these kinds of temperatures, much less get on a bus and go to school. I’m surprised anything mechanical works.
Will this have an effect on lutefisk prices?
It can only be eaten once a year.....because it takes a year to get the taste out of the mouth. I have about 8 months to go.
Bush’s fault!
I understand one's breath odor lasted about a year with that stuff too.
It's not nearly as bad as you think. You put on plenty of clothes, and use a scarf. You plug in the car heater when it gets below -40. When it gets that cold, it's usually not very windy, so you just have to be careful to not get stuck outside for a long time.
I did have a car failure once, a hundred miles from home, when it was -40, and very windy. I had a second coat in the car so I put it on, and walked about a mile to a gas station. From there I called a towing garage. The owner said all of his trucks were out because of the weather, so he closed the shop, picked me up in his personal car, and towed me back to his shop with a rope. It happened to be New Year's Eve, so he had no mechanics there. He gave me the keys to his parts bins and tool boxes and let me go at it alone. I was able to fix the problem, but only after he called his friend who owned the Chevy dealership to open up to sell me the bad part. People help each other out in the cold country (Northern Minnesota). Too bad they elect Democrats.
The guy - a vietnam vet - was nonplussed over our flight to fresh air, saying that the smell of kimchi "wasn't near as bad" as the aroma of nuc mom. Go figure. All I know is that had it been -40 outside at the time, I'd have chosen the cold.
