Samsung Electronics reported its lowest annual profit since 2011 during its earnings call today as its smartphone sales continue to suffer from increasing competition. In 2014, the companys profit was 25 trillion won, a 32 percent drop from a high of 36.8 trillion won in 2013.
Its 4Q2014 net profit fell 27 percent to 5.3 trillion won year-over-year, in-line with Samsungs earning guidance earlier this month.
The Korean tech giant reported that its mobile units earnings dropped 64 percent year-over-year to 1.96 trillion won, marketing its fifth quarterly decline in a row. Mobile sales accounted for just 58 percent of Samsungs total operating profit last year, a significant decrease from 70 percent in 2013. The company said smartphone shipments fell in 4Q2014 and will continue to decline this quarter.

Samsung’s big competitor is demolishing it ... :-) ...
Dear Skeptics, Here’s How Apple Will Continue To Demolish Expectations
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3251650/posts
Apple delivered the greatest earnings report in history on Tuesday.
That’s not hyperbole. Apple earned $18 billion in net income over the three-month period of October to December 2014. That’s more than any other company has ever earned over a three-month span.
Apple earned those mind-melting profits thanks mostly to the iPhone, which is an incredible business.
Apple sold 74.5 million iPhones, up 46% from the year prior. The iPhone generated $51 billion in revenue, giving each iPhone an average selling price of $687.
How much is a “won” worth in dollars?
Apple is eating Samsung’s kimchee.
What happened was that Apple rode the wave of the hugely pent-up demand for a larger screen iPhone—and when it did deliver, sales went through the roof. I know of at least 12 people at my workplace that now have iPhone 6 (64 GB) models.
Samsung has hit hard competition in the way of seemingly hundreds of Android phone brands and models. There are decent Android phones for about $100 or so. It is not enough to have the top quality that Samsung has... The same operating system - Android allows a cheap phone to do most of the same things as an expensive phone - not so with Apple.
Despite Apple’s record profit on iPhone sales — total Android smart phone sales out number iPhone sales by far - just to get a perspective on the size of the market.
And yet Samsung keeps selling chips and other parts to Apple for use in iPhones.
It is android OS that is the competitor. It is on more devices then Apple OS is.
Looks like Samsung's strategy to copy Apple and undercut them on price in the smartphone market is not working out too well these days.
Samsung can only FOOL PEOPLE for so long, and then it catches up to them. I would say it’s catching up now ... :-) ...
If I just want my phone to work, every time, with no surprises, I go with Apple, every time.
And who doesn’t want their phone to work, every time, with no surprises?
I know this is a bit off topic but I didn’t want to start a whole thread for the question.
Has anyone else been unable to log in to Yahoo mail?
I have been unable to since maybe 4 P.M. CST and I have tried 3 different computers and two different browsers.
None have managed to log on.
I know Samsung is taking a beating financially, but I believe that’s mostly due to poor design decisions. Too many models that all blend together stylistically.
Having said that, I own the Note 4, and I’m very impressed overall. My one hope is that the upcoming lollipop update will see Touchwiz dialed back significantly.
It might have something to do with the millions of consumer reeports worldwide about their TVs failing within 2 years and them not offering to fix it for free but rather charge $800 plus to fix a problem they created in the first place. Personally I think they have planned obsolescence programmed into some of their electronics to make them go defective. Read the number of reports I’ve read and you might too. I after. Two TVs went defective each right fer the warranty expired I will never buy their products again. Ever.

5.3 Trillion won = $4,870,000,000.
Numbers of phone sales is all well and good. . . but in the quarter immediately preceding this one, Apple and Samsung took home 108% of all Cellular phone handset profits. . . and they, along with Xiaomi of China, were the only 3 Cellular phone manufacturers who made any profits at all. Xiaomi (pronounced Showme) made all of $7 million for the entire quarter, not even a blip. All 223 other Android Cell phone makers posted loses! Apple took home 87% of the profits and Samsung 21% (the over 108% is the result of the loses posted by the others).
This quarter, with the HUGE increases by Apple, and the 27% decrease in profits by Samsung, I would not be surprised to see Apple claiming 95% of the profits of the industry for the quarter!
As for market share, Apple is grabbing market share as well. . . even claiming 33% Samsung's home market in South Korea! Apple is the number one selling cellular phone in China.
So you want to compare 225 companies making over 1100 phones and tablets against ONE. company making about 15 phones models and tablet models. Right. Sure. That makes sense.
