Time and again we are reminded why it is prudent to have a back up plan just in case things go wrong. Youve already got car insurance, house insurance, medical insurance and life insurance. But what about disaster insurance? And no, were not talking about a piece of paper guarantee issued by some behemoth corporation who youre supposed to call when things go wrong.
Real disaster insurance in this context refers to your own personal and familial emergency reserve supplies and strategies, to be consumed and implemented when all hell breaks loose.

You can go back farther than that, too. I was in NY in ‘64 and ‘77 when the city experienced total blackouts. Not only no increase in crime, but IIRC, crime declined.

The greatest threat in a SHTF situation will come from single, young males traveling in packs. That's the greatest threat in any city in general - today.

My wife grew up on a mountain in the dirt poor Appalachians. The idea of prepping is funny to her. That was just life for her. A basement full of mason jars and a wood stove.
During a massive snowstorm in 1996, she and her mom were trapped on the mountain with a 3 month-old and a 2 year-old. 4 days later, a cousin got there to rescue them and they sent him home with food.

“So I think one needs both a stay-in-place plan and an alternative plan that involves relocating.”
Yep. I have that. I’m 10 miles south of a major metro area...the feral youth could make it this way, were they motivated enough after trashing said major metro area.
So...I have a place to go to in another county if need be.
Dear God, PLEASE don’t let this happen to us! Thank You. Amen!

Men with wives and children to provide for will be at a great disadvantage. Not if said wife and kids are better shots than Pop!

There’s strength in numbers, whether that is family, friends, neighbors, Church groups or even local and state governments.
If their ever way a real SHTF situation, It w/b real difficult for the individual or the individual family, especially with small children or elderly parents.

A rowboat on the open ocean sounds like a good way to drown, and the coast is mostly rocky lava and cannot be approached once you are out there burning through whatever you managed to toss onboard.
Sailboat would be nice, but hard to get moving quickly, and requires a helluva lot of time to learn how to operate competently.

Those people won't do it.
They are unsure if you have anything, plus, you might be armed.
I have ZERO DOUBT THESE DAYS that these people will:
They are armed, have radio backup, and no fear...

I’ve always thought the best disaster insurance when all hell breaks loose starts with “A” and ends with “7”.
Insurance will not help you if you are dead.

Those radios and backup are of no use if an EMP strike hits.
They are only armed, with a very limited supply of ammo that they are carrying.
To: coloradan
It's just a pic I found.
Believe me, at first it will only be a few. Most will be helpful.
But as time goes on, and the best fed officers and families have all done raids, it will be all of them.
It is the consequence of power. Absolute power.

Depends where you are. I’ll soon be in a rural area with 20 acres. There are few natural disasters in the area. And as one neighbor we met said, he has enough ammunition to defend the hollow if need be. We chose the area and those people to have as friends and neighbors in purpose. It’ll be way better than living in mexifornia, where I agree the plan should always be to leave. When the entitled illegals want your stuff, it will be ugly.

That’s a great story. I think in order to really be prepared, one does have to live it as much as possible.

Those radios and backup are of no use if an EMP strike hits.
Actually, most handheld transceivers will survive EMP since their circuits are designed to operate in a high RF environment such as the transmitter itself in the radio. Also, they are VHF/UHF, most of the EMP's energy is below that. Now I can see that point if you're talking about the network system but for point to point, they should still work at short range. I guess one can rig up a HT walkie-talkie as a base, even a low powered signal will reach far if you have a good antenna and height. When I was at Lake Erie in 2001, I worked Canada using 1 watt out of my 2 meter HT using the rubber ducky antenna and 6 penlite batteries. My signal went 50 miles across Lake Erie and 20/30 miles into Ontario.
