A woman is suing Target, alleging her son committed suicide after being forced to take part in a humiliating disciplinary event in front of co-workers and customers at the Pasadena store where he worked as a cashier.
...
Her son jumped to his death from the roof of the Courtyard Marriott in Monrovia on July 18, three days after he was required by Target management to take part in what the suit calls a walk of shame.
According to the complaint, police and store security met Graham Gentles immediately as he arrived for work, and, at the direction of two members of store management, was handcuffed and led before other store employees to an office.
...
He was questioned in the office, then later taken to the police station, according to the lawsuit. However, he was later released and never charged with any crime, according to the complaint.
...
The walk of shame is a Target policy to purposely cause shame, embarrassment and emotional distress to any Target employee who is suspected of stealing from Target, the suit states. The policy consists of employees being arrested and paraded in handcuffs through the Target store in full view of co-workers and customers.

I hope there’s more to this story than we are hearing! I can’t believe Target would have a policy like this. But then Cracker Barrel fires vets who give away stale muffins to homeless folks...
Well a few guesses.
To actually put handcuffs on him and take him in for interrogation makes me think they had solid proof that he was stealing.
Apparently just having him not show up for work anymore because he was arrested for stealing wasn’t deterrent enough so Target seems to have opted for an arrest without charges for the sake of deterrence.
I say this because it seems patently illegal to use the police to bully your employees in case they are stealing.
So the wording “suspected” of stealing is used instead of “caught stealing” because Target let the matter drop in exchange for humiliation.
So who the heck shops at TArget anymore anyway?
If those centrist and on the right simply stopped going there, this discussion would be pretty much moot.
I don’t shop there anymore and, frankly, this doesn’t surprise me a bit.
Your post 11 was good sarcasm. Even without the sarc tag.
Now it appears you have a problem with me being pro-life.
Because I’m against suicide, you want OFF the M/A list?
Suppose you calm down and explain yourself.
Yes.
What about Tom Brady and the Patriots?
Maybe the security office was purposely placed in the rear of the store with no nearby doors to the outside in order to force/facilitate this. Maybe it’s a coincidence. I do remember a case where a police department got successfully sued for a public perp walk by someone who was subsequently acquitted, which caused a nationwide change in police department policies.
The suicide heightens the sympathy value here, no matter what names we might call the deceased. Maybe the family will end up the better part of a million dollars richer.
Mr. Gentles mother I believe has a case with a personal injury lawyer. In light of Target releasing a statement expressing sympathy for the loss of her son they have opened up an avenue for a lawyer to show they felt culpable for for his death. This could be a major expensive blunder for Target.
On the other hand, If there wasn’t sufficient probable cause to prosecute then the whole handcuffing thing is simple assault. Target and everyone defending this have shit for brains and are themselves pussies who delight in armed men with guns parading around and playing prison movie screw on young clerks.
Amazing how much hypocrisy the little thugwannabe contingent at Free Republic likes to display.
Can you rewrite your post? It’s hard to understand but perhaps you are on to something. I’m really confused by this story.
Sounds more like a gay policy of San Francisco than target to me.
” ... he was later released and never charged with any crime.”
This is the problem with Target’s policy. There has to be a better way to confront an employee who is suspected to be a thief but where probable cause for arrest has not yet been reached.
It can’t help with publicity either... watch for some very major public relations thrusts by Target. Like major donations to suicide intervention agencies. Just my guess of course. But what happens on Facebook stays on Facebook....
The police put the cuffs on that kid not Target employee’s.
Wahhhhh. You hurt my feewings. I’m gonna kill myself.
Then my heirs can SUE you.
(And you have no problem with being sued?)
But, Tech, they’ve lost their son!
Now I don’t want to jump all over this because I’ve been burned before. It’s quite possible he was a thief. But Target has a VERY weird policy about theft.
Suicide doesn’t please God. But mocking the deaths of others is also wrong. Target’s policy is wrong and an offense to freedom. This kid was mentally unstable and he committed suicide, perhaps in part, due to this policy. The moral absolute in this case would be to decry Target’s policy, pray for the young man’s soul and hope his mother reaches some earthly peace. I hope his mother does find emotional peace, and I am sorry for this senseless death.
Your mocking of this tragic death proves you do not understand mercy, and are incapable of understanding true morality.
Someone like Morgana would be better suited to head this list.
Please take me off your list.

As always, freepers bring more info to the table. I guess I’ll have to google this strange event. Thanks for posting!
Yep. Since their recent major problems with credit card security they are walking on thin ice with a policy like this.
I didn’t say that kind of compensation oughtn’t to happen.
It also sounds like an odd policy blunder. Normally the sensitivity lawyers would be aghast over it, which is enough to spook 99 44/100% of corporates.
