The NFL is investigating whether the Patriots deflated footballs that were used in their AFC championship game victory over the Colts.

If air pressure is that much of an issue, until they start being smart and filling the balls with nitrogen the question is moot.
Probably Putin’s fault.
That makes sense.
Yes, it’s going to make some difference, but not that much. I go back to the way it was found out. The Colts player that intercepted the ball noticed the difference. He knew it was out of specs, I’d think the refs should have known as well.
They stole it from the Colts.....
exactly,, we allow cheating and skirting the rules in everyday life already...
excuses for everything..
Yes, but what I’m trying to point out to you is:
1) Most QBs prefer the balls under-inflated, so at most they would be handing in balls at 12.5—not the average that is allowed.
2) Reportedly it is not uncommon for teams to hand in under-inflated balls, hoping that the refers don’t bother to find and correct the difference.
3) In cold weather, balls deflate outside after that measurement. It wasn’t really cold in New England for the game, but it often is for games this time of year.
Put that all together and refs are probably used to handling balls that are under the technical 12.5 minimum.
People use “pounds” to denote pounds per square inch all the time.
When I pulled in to the pits during an endurance race I did not tell my tire guy “Please inflate the rear tire by an additional 1.5 pounds per square inch of pressure” - I yelled “Add 1.5 pounds to the rear”. He knew what I meant, and I avoided spending half the day on pit road.
The article even included the notation “(PSI)” at the end of the sentence in question.
Jeff may very well be ignorant, but your misguided criticism is not proof of such.
If the under-inflation was intentional, then the 12th ball could have been for the kicker.
Who ever imagined the game would be that lopsided? The alleged cheating might have influenced a close game, but with the perfect knowledge of 20-20 hindsight, it wasn't necessary. The points spread was said to be 6.5 points prior to the game, so many people expected it to be close, presumably including the teams themselves.
Who cares? I’ll second that. A pimple on the ass of time game takes up this much oxygen?
If both teams used the same balls, where was the advantage?
No wonder the Kenyan is succeeding when an insignificant game becomes a national issue for the public.
If they are, chalk it up to the weather. If not, Belicheat has struck again.
The only problem with this argument is that the footballs are kept warm on the sideline when not in use on the field...
A Colts player wearing gloves intercepted a pass and felt something was wrong with the ball but at least two game officials with bare hands handled the ball before the play and noticed nothing?
Now there's an expurt on underinflated balls.
Strange, isn’t it?
Here is the bottom line....prior to kickoff the ref’s handle the balls from both sides. The ref’s would have 100% noticed if the Pats balls had been 2psi under-inflated. There is more to this story....
This is interesting—the memories of a ball boy for Bill Belichick. Sounds like Bill got to know at least this ball boy, up close and giving him favors, pretty quickly:
Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie, ball boy New England Patriots 2000-2001: “Larry Izzo was a special teams player, and he recognized I was Steve DeOssie’s son when I walked in the door. He took me under his wing, and all of the linebackers then sort of adopted me as their ball boy. I took care of them. They let me get a pair of shoes. It was an incredible experience.
“Coach Belichick asked me during camp if I like Bon Jovi. I told him I did, even though I really didn’t know much about him. He said, ‘Great, we’re going to the Tweeter Center tonight to see him.’ I said, ‘Are you kidding? What about bed check?’ He said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ I went to the concert with coach Belichick, his wife at the time, his right hand man Berj Najarian and his wife. I’m standing next to Coach Belichick and we’re jamming out to Bon Jovi. I’m a junior in high school. To have him include me in that was pretty cool. Those memories will stay with me for a long time.
“Then when the Patriots went to the Super Bowl, Coach Belichick let me come to the game and be a ball boy on the sidelines. No responsibilities. Just stay out of the way. And I was there on the field to watch Adam Vinatieri kick the game winner against the Rams... Fast forward five years, I’m playing against the Patriots and Larry Izzo in the Super Bowl my rookie year. I’m lining up for a punt snap and half of the punt return team is calling me ball boy and yelling at me to go get them a Gatorade after I botch the snap.”
Another source reminded readers that the Patriots were fined in 2007 for spying on an opponent.
No team needs this kind of controversy swirling around them leading into the Super Bowl. No matter what the investigation concludes, the Patriots are going into the big game looking like cheaters in the eye of the public and this is all the press is going to be talking about in the next couple of weeks.
I think that there were only 2 Seahawks that did an infomercial for Obiecare, and maybe they were given an offer they couldn’t refuse. I’ve not seen the ad. I’ve heard that Russell Wilson is one of the Hawks in the ad. Russell praised God after the game, knelt in prayer with other players and visits patients at Seattle’s Childrens Hospital every Tuesday (without the media).
I’ve never met Pete Carroll, and don’t really know his history, except that he was a winning coach in college ball and has been good for Seattle. I have a very good friend that knows Pete very well and said he is a great guy.
Marshawn Lynch (Beast Mode) wouldn’t go to the WH as part of the winning SB team (good on him I say).
Just felt compelled to stick up for my Seahawks :-)
