It cannot be said too often -- as glaciers withdraw in Greenland, we find remains of Viking settlements that had been covered by ice. We know that grapes were once grown in England for wine-making. The world was CLEARLY warmer 1000 years ago -- and, again, a thousand years before that -- the Roman Empire peaked during a warm period 2000 years ago.
The idea that 2014 was the warmest year ever is a pathetic joke. And if one says "We mean: since 1880" then it's just terrible science because the size of the sample data is embarrassingly small. Real scientists don't operate this way. But charlatans do,

With today’s Global Warming statements contradicting yesterdays Global Warming statements, and all days before that, it’s getting hard to accept anybody’s word on this topic, regardless of their belief system.

How dare you actually look at confidence intervals when the point estimate serves to advance the interests of The Party! There’s a remedial course on the correct use of statistics being offered in Room 101, and you are mandated to attend!

The Weather Channel is the biggest purveyor of GW BS that I've ever witnessed.
Early this morning when talking about extreme weather, they had a NOAA scientist who made the claim that the 15 warmest annual average global temperatures occurred in the past 17 years........thus proving man made global warming is real.......
I almost puked my coffee....

We just came through the coldest Summer in over 30 years. I question the veracity of the statement that 2014 was one of the warmest years on record. The two statements are not logically compatible.

What would happen to a NOAA employee or department if they came up with a study that showed no warming or even cooling?
To: Bulwinkle
Warmest year on record: 48.0% One of the five warmest years: 90.4% One of the 10 warmest years: 99.2% One of the 20 warmest years: 100.0% Warmer than the 20th century average: 100.0% Warmer than the 1981-2010 average: 100.0% NCDC follows these conventions to categorize the confidence associated with assertions made with respect to ranks used in the report: PROBABILITY DESCRIPTOR > 99% "almost certain" 90% - 99% "very likely" 66.7% - 90% "likely" 50% - 66.7% "more likely than not" 33.3% - 50% "more unlikely than likely" 10% - 33.3% "unlikely" 1% - 10% "very unlikely" < 1% "almost certainly not"Looks like they are using multiple guess "science" these days...
