Two weeks ago, I researched online about what "asymmetrical warfare" is, and then all heck broke loose since that time for two weeks. I got knocked off the internet on the average of every ten minutes, every single day. Internet Explorer had monumental issues, but when I did get on I utilized weather data for my area, then on to FR as usual. But when I was on FR, I would get bumped off AGAIN... I had a tech come to the house to find out whether there was any kind of issue with the internet, and he said there was none that he was picking up--but did say I could just have the internet signal rerouted through the 'phone box' and then through a router I could buy (the previous router was a modem/router combo). Since I have done so, I can now browse and such, but am still encountering a mess of very slow response to search commands, ESPECIALLY when I am seeing to go on to FR.
Waterfox is what I am using
It sounds like you did have some malware!
Spyware is often downloaded in web-based advertising and lies dormant waiting to be activated. There are some very obscure ways that it can become active, many of which do not require you to click on anything.
Even "trustworthy" sites may carry brokered adverts from unchecked sources which contain spyware. And "trustworthy" sites can be compromised for weeks before the operators detect the problem.
Your best bet is to scan your entire system with a commercial anti-virus utility and see if it detects anything.
Regular purging of your browser caches and temporary file areas is helpful too.
That will tell you loads
When you read stuff on sites, are there a lot of underlined words that have pop-ups if your cursor touches them?
That is also adware!
Will do. As for Facelurk, I hate ‘em—they’re constantly dumping people I do not know onto my page as “friends”, and other various and sundry things that burns my whiskers.
“as for FirefoxOmigosh, you talk about browsers messing up! It kept opening up multiple tabs without my say-so to ad sites, and pop-up add crap everywhere. Could never get anything done, so after two tries of uninstalling and reinstalling and making sure I had the latest version, I finally called it quits. Im thinking of reinstalling Tor.”
You are probably full of viruses and malware.
Browsers don’t do that, malware, adware, viruses that glom on the the browser do that.
NoScript says it blocks 4 scripts on this page.... hhmmm
It will save your settings, data, bookmarks, and applications.
Took me a couple + hours and now it looks just like my Win 7 pro. Much more security in this version.
Getting to use it is fairly easy.
I would think govt snooping is just that. They watch where you go, but don’t limit access. Why would they? If you are up to no good, they want as much info on you and where you go as possible.
Modems and routers do go bad. Usually they act erratically before they completely die. I’ve had bad/noisy DSL signals coming into the house a couple of times that were due to hardware faults after a storm. I’ve had windows and browser updates that were unstable and I had to backdate the system to get things running smoothly again. A couple times I’ve had malware sneak in, but those instances are usually the easiest to find and resolve.
Even if you’re not currently logged in, they may have left you a “present.”
NoScript is awesome. Don’t browse the web without it.
did you download something from CNET or Download.com?
...
Anyway, on that Firefox you can add NoScript, Bluhell and Ad Blocker Plus which will suppress the pop-ups even if the viruses are still there.
Adaware and Malwarebytes or other programs can help find and eliminate them.
Sounds like you have some pesky adware (or maybe a trojan) on your computer that's slowing things down.
Try malwarebytes
My cat objected to my focus on an article in Free Republic and curled up on top of my mouse.
I love having to give temporary permission for sites to run stuff. Makes me feel in charge.
Google is buying up all unused fiber optic to build a mega high speed system. I think it might rob from the poor and give to the rich per se . Austin Texas has it allegedly ....
There is a disturbance of some kind going on.
Or maybe just a lot of people streaming video.
If you go with Firefox, add NoScript and Ghostery. It’s a little inconvenient while you are picking what to let through and what to block, but once you get it set up and use them a while, it gets simpler. And if you want to be lazy and let down your guard to ‘enjoy’ the full experience of a site, you just copy the web address, launch IE, paste the address, and get the full benefits and costs of a site loaded with scripts and tracking (spy) ware.
