Zoo Won’t Let de Blasio Hold Groundhog After He Killed One Last Year

The NYPD isn't the only city organization that has lost complete confidence in the esteemed Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio.

After he dropped the groundhog during last year's Groundhog Day celebrations, the Staten Island Zoo has unequivocally banned De Blasio from holding or handling any more of their animals in a celebratory setting.

- Mayor de Blasio won’t be killing any more groundhogs — zoo handlers are forbidding the butter-fingered mayor from holding the critter at the annual shadow-sighting ceremony on Feb. 2, The Post has learned.

The ban came after The Post first revealed that the groundhog de Blasio fumbled and dropped last year died a week later of internal injuries — and then Staten Island Zoo officials covered up the death...

“No one will be allowed to touch the groundhog,” one zoo insider briefed on the new policy told The Post.

The Groundhog Day celebration actually has quite the history of controversy. Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also denied the opportunity to cuddle the creature after a 2009 incident where "Staten Island Chuck" was unwilling to leave his comfortable hovel and bit Bloomberg on the finger when he tried to coax it out.

I couldn’t believe this was a real story. What a thing to cover up. Look how fragile they are.

The ground hog is one of the toughest varmints to kill there ever was. We use to hunt them all the time as a kid on the farm. All I had to hunt with was a .22LR. But even using HP, many a varmint went back down the hole. Yes there would be a blood trail and after several weeks he would be out again. There was this one sucker who had his den smack out in the middle of an alfalfa field. Hard to sneak up on so shots were always 100 yds +. I had hit him several times. When I finally did succeed. he had 5 healed entry wounds. You are not going to kill one that easy.

Easier to get with a live trap baited with an apple. For some reason, they just can’t resist apples. The critters are very sensitive to heat. It would generally kill them by the time I got home from work. If not, then I`d drown them in the livestock tank. MUCH kinder and quicker than a .22 slug to the head.

If you can find the audio of the press conference where DiBlasio discusses his “groundhog ban” you’ll hear him laughing about it. He thinks the whole episode is funny and blames last year’s killing on “lack of adequate training”.

Every groundhog I ever shot died, virtually instantly*. Never had one crawl more than five feet. Most of 'em didn't make it anywhere near that far, if they even moved out of their tracks.

'Course, I was using 80 grain pointed soft points in .234 caliber at almost 3000 fps. Turns 'em inside out, it does.

*Note: Sayin' I killed every one that I hit is NOT saying I hit every one that I shot at.
