My "Aha Moment" happened because of a package of hamburger meat. I asked my husband to stop by the store to pick up a few things for dinner, and when he got home, he plopped the bag on the counter. I started pulling things out of the bag, and realized he'd gotten the 70/30 hamburger meat - which means it's 70% lean and 30% fat. Correct. But the business cannot make customers pay a penny more than the customers want to pay. The business that cannot make a profit at that price must stop selling certain products or go out of business entirely.
I’ve been watching a lot of the back and forth and I have to chime in here (sorry for the interruption/intrusion).
Generally chuck makes great hamburger, but if you buy larger cuts like whole prime rib and other fattier cuts of beef; when you butcher them you can save the fat in a vacuum bag for use later.
(Hint: sirloin makes great burger when you think ahead to keep enough fat on hand to make it the ratio you want). I freeze it for reuse up to 2 years later this way, works great. Sometimes butchers will sell excess fat as well.
Of course you want to avoid bubble gum fat, but you get the jist.
I’ve come to accept that some of the complainers about the source of a post, provided it doesn’t cause a copywrite issue, are simply trolls trying to sow discontent at this website. Ignore them, they are as annoying as the “troll wife” in the article was to her husband.

No, he may love her, but he was beyond attempting to please her. Pleasing one's wife is no longer a matter of pride when she continually takes advantage of his efforts to do so. If he sees the boot prints across his back as a source of pride, he has only my pity. Let's just say, I know this woman's personality all too well. Rear-view mirror, darling.

We really do. We knew by our 3rd date that we would be together forever. Got married the first weekend that was 6 months after we met to be “respectable.”

wonderful! I’ve never been married but recently started dating a very nice man from my church (he is divorced several years). I have always made it a habit to read the threads on marriage topics, just to see what others have to say, and to see if i can learn something in event I ever end up married. Not sure it will ever happen to me, but if it does, I want it to be something joyful for both of us, not a warzone. You can learn a lot from reading all these types of threads....

That being said, if you buy a package of 'hamburger' at the store, and it says 70% lean / 30%fat, how much fat is in it, exactly ?
IF it says 80% lean / 20%fat, then how much ?
Have you ever taken hamburger you purchased and verified these figures for yourself ?
The real difference (I am told) is in how much it shrinks during cooking, and how much grease(fat) it produces(separates) via cooking.
When I was working in the butcher shop one of my jobs was cutting hamburger meat. You cut the lean and weight it, then you cut up fat that has been trimmed and weigh it. For a 100# of 80/20 it's 80# of lean and 20# of fat.

That's a silly question. You can't do that but if you want to try go for it.

Sounds like the people who "told" you that were rather naive. It depends on where the fat came from and how you cook it. Some fat will render out completely when the hamburger is cooked to very well done and dry other fat will not. Not all the liquid in the pan came from fat. Some of it is body fluids from the meat. Also, if you buy hamburger already ground and packaged the law allows them to add a certain percentage of water to keep the hamburger from drying out prior to cooking.
I never buy pre ground hamburger. I buy cuts of meat and grind it myself. I prefer some pork fat included.

Going by POUNDS of lean and POUNDS of fat makes sense. In the end, though, it's not 20% fat, it is more. Correct?
It would seem that you could weigh the hamburger before you cook it, and then after, and the difference would be the loss in fat and water.
Go play that childish game with someone else.

It would seem logical. Do you know how they measure calories ?
