Petco said Monday it has removed all remaining Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its website and stores nationwide because of concerns they have sickened thousands of pets and killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says initial tests have not connected the Chinese jerky and rawhide treats to the illnesses, but the San Diego-based company and its rival PetSmart vowed in May to ban the snacks.
Petco is the first national pet retailer to pull the treats from its 1,300 stores. Phoenix-based PetSmart Inc. said Monday that it plans to have them off shelves at its roughly 1,300 stores by March.

Should have been done a long time ago.
I will not buy any dog products or snacks made in China...so that narrows the field a lot. We bought a de-hydrator and make our own jerky and snacks for our fur babies and have saved a mint making it ourselves.
“Anyone that cares about their health would not eat anything packaged in China.”

“And because the poultry will be processed, it will not require country-of-origin labeling. Nor will consumers eating chicken noodle soup from a can or chicken nuggets in a fast-food restaurant know if the chicken came from Chinese processing plants.”

Very disturbing story, especially when those are all top brands and there’s no way you could have known (except for subtle change in packaging and company ownership??)
This is where Congress should require content labeling. It would be a legitimate exercise of its power to regulate commerce with foreign nations. Perhaps some lobbying is in order?
I am OK with Canada, Britain or Australia as well...
Melamine was used to artificially raise the protein level when assayed. It tested well, but poisoned the dogs. Several thousands of dogs were sickened, and over 1000 died.
I know for sure that Waggin Train is Chinese.
The Chinese now make dogs and cats ?
Funny you mention that. My blue merle smooth collies LOVED the Purina chow I used to buy. Then the name was changed to “Healthy Vitality” (about a month before the melamine scandal hit the press). They absolutely REFUSED to eat it. Pollux, who was a foodaholic went 3 days without eating, and Castor went 5.
Even Zippy (peke/pom/sheltie) refused it for a week.
I thought there was something wrong with the dogs, took them to the vet, and on the way home bought a different brand (made in Canada) food.
Not a problem since.
I check EVERY label of food I buy now. If it doesn’t come from a free country, I won’t buy it anymore. Europe, Japan, S Korea, Aus, USA, Canada, sure. Anyone else I am VERY cautious.
I saw a big bag of treats at Petco today. Reminded me of the bags of all the cheap sh—ty candy you see around halloween.
It had rolled up rawhide, some hooves, some ears and....an entire pig foot. bones, skin, flesh hooves and all—all dried up.... nothing dogs (or people) don’t eat... but looked like a crime scene or something..just a pig foot lopped off and dehydrated
A good start.
They should have done this a long time ago. The Chinese adult irate every thing. I have refused to buy their food either human or pet food for years

I can relate. Several years ago when I was buying tires from BJ’s, I had ten (10) in a row develop cracks in the side walls. I told the manager of the danger and he told me to get lost. I’ve wondered since how many accidents have been caused by dried-out, cracked BJ tires (their shelf-life is about 36 months).
Sadly, its not just the Chinese products that are harmful to pets.

We recently discovered that Blue Rhino cat food (the one with the photo of a Lynx on the bag) was seriously harming our male cat.
A short time after putting him on it, he developed a serious urinary blockage, and bleeding. We were able to alleviate the problem with juniper tea, but didn’t realize what the cause was, and the condition returned in about a month. The second time, we eliminated the dry food completely, and he was ok for months. We let him have some more of it, partly because he loves the stuff, and the problem quickly returned.
Dry foods are simply not natural for cats.
.
Did you know that present federal regs require that tires decompose in sunlight within 15 years?
.
Actually, tires are required to turn into government free cheese in 15 years.
Just about!
We had two Generals blow out the sidewall within a few months, that were only four years old.
