Is New Year’s Eve the Worst Holiday?
Richocet ^ | December 30, 2014 | Jon Gabriel

As a kid, New Year’s Eve fascinated me. It was a night when grown-ups dressed up, drank fancy cocktails and danced across ballroom floors. Granted, my parents only went out a time or two, but I had seen the movies. Most adults had the times of their lives and I couldn’t wait to join them. We kids would fight to stay up late, bang pots and pans and light the illicit firework or two, but it just wasn’t the same.

Once I hit drinking age, I spent several New Year’s Eves at college bars or block parties where I could finally join the excitement. I rarely found much. Most the celebrations were overcrowded nightmares of sweaty throngs and queasy drinkers. Hardly the tuxedo-clad soirées I had imagined as a lad. There wasn’t even a big band, for pity’s sake.

Absolutely true. It’s been years since I was there as a kid, but we had the same experience. The wealthy South American tourists treated everyone else like peasants.

Nothing like Obama’s NBC running New Years Eve celebrations right now from North Korea. I saw the hammer and the sickle in some monument and now they are running pictures of Kim Jong Un.

New Years Eve in Sydney Australia can be sublime. You roll out a blanket in a good spot to view the fireworks on the bridge or are in a boat on the harbour. It is usually a warm summer evening. Picnic while the Symphony orchestra plays throughout the evening on the radio while sipping champagne topped with a great fireworks finale of the bridge being lit up. Here is the 2015 celebration that has already happened this morning EST.

How about “I watched my son being born”...while attempting to elude the police has a nice ring.

When I was young and looking at my 56 Missal it was Circumcision Day. No others are listed.

That would be the annual purge. It runs from 7pm March 21 through to 7am March 22.

In my later pre-Noachide years "new year's eve" was my favorite holiday. No, I never went out or anything, but I watch Guy Lombardo on TV the last few years before he died. I still miss him.

I also have always been fascinated by calendars and the measurement of time.
