NEW YORK Penn State waited two years to play in a bowl game, working through unprecedented NCAA sanctions stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, and the teams finale didnt lack dramatics.
The Nittany Lions went back and forth with Boston College this evening at Yankee Stadium in the Pinstripe Bowl, trading big hits and explosive runs until the game required extra possessions.
Penn States senior class, one that experienced five different head coaches during their collegiate careers, NCAA sanctions and a bowl ban that was lifted early in September, capped their careers with the class first bowl victory, beating Boston College 31-30 in overtime.
Quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit tight end Kyle Carter in overtime, and a successful extra point from Sam Ficken not a given considering the Eagles (7-6) shanked their extra point attempt after scoring first sent the Lions (7-6) into celebration.
The Lions trailed 21-7 in the second half and after a first half where both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, Hackenberg showed signs of the freshman sensation who led the Lions last season.
Staying upright in the pocket and working the ball downfield, the quarterback who threw a career-high 15 interceptions in the regular season and hadnt eclipsed 300 yards passing since the teams Sept. 13 win against Rutgers showed off that big arm again.
In the first quarter Hackenberg lofted a ball down the Penn State sideline to true freshman Chris Godwin, who hauled in the deep pass and took off for a 72-yard touchdown to put the Lions on the board first. The touchdown was the second of Godwins career, and he finished the game with a career-high seven catches for 140 yards.

Ummm FG w/ play clock expired is nothing at all like a judgement PI call. The whole country saw what happened. You can ignore it all you want. It won’t change the fact that PSU was royally screwed.
Fans will always show up at Yankee Stadium to boo a team from Boston.

...as I anticipated, you completely missed my point...I used the PI call to illustrate what a losing proposition it is to employ the blame the ref defense to excuse a loss...especially since the game consumes 60 minutes and a bad call constitutes an infinitesimal segment of it...
The whole country saw what happened.
...heh...three quarters of the country have no clue who won a football game between PSU-OSU..nor would they care if they did...get over yourself...
Compared to a few years when 90% of the comments on FR about PSU were nothing but vicious, mindless bile, the comments this evening are refreshingly rational. Both teams played their hearts out and the better team won-—barely but fairly. I hope we’ve heard the last from the mindless “nuke Penn State” crowd.
Frankly, I think PSU should never have become part of the B1G, and I still think they should leave. B1G refs treat them like an out-of-conference school, and have done so now for two decades. It’s a shame they have nowhere else to go.
Sigh. If only.
I saw a bumper sticker about too weeks ago, the dark sarcasm of which conveyed the mindless hatred of the "Pedophile U" crowd perfectly:
"That's right: for twenty years, all six hundred thousand of us knew about Jerry."
The PSU FR haters have actually posted even stupider things than that -- but sadly, they've been serious.
Just thought I'd interject an ejaculation here.
I have not watched a single bowl game this year, but will watch the Semis and the Championship game.
Alabama over OSU, and Oregon by 3+ TDs over FSU.
Oregon to beat Alabama by 10; maybe more.
Great Game, with a sold out Yankee stadium. From ESPN Mark Holtzman, who runs non-baseball events for the New York Yankees, said tickets sold out in 36 hours, the fastest of the five Pinstripe Bowls.

...why are you telling me this...I have never referred to PSU as mindless and vicious...I dislike PSU football, but mindless bile is not what I deal in...
Both teams played their hearts out and the better team won-barely but fairly
...nonsense...BC had the game won, not once, but twice...
I hope weve heard the last from the mindless nuke Penn State crowd.
...why...? It’s a valid opinion, albeit deluded...isn’t that what this forum is all about, opinions...? Or is it about something else...?
B1G refs treat them like an out-of-conference school, and have done so now for two decades
...good Lord...oh the humanity...two full decades of outsider treatment from the B1G refs...how do you PSU fans even manage the courage to wake up in the mornings...?
...but, if telling us the refs have conspired to prevent you from dominating the B1G makes you feel better, who am I to say any different...? After all, charity demands no less of me.
I have never referred to PSU as mindless and vicious..
...hah...my composition skills have eroded as fast as my teeth...meant to say this...
...I have never referred to PSU with a mindless and vicious post...
Alabama over OSU
...only because the refs, ESPN, and the NCAA will all collude to make sure no B1G team makes it to the final...just to punish them for PSU...
...so will say B1G Nation if OSU loses...
and Oregon by 3+ TDs over FSU.
...dream on...they won’t beat them by any more than two TD’s and a FG...how could your prediction be so wrong...?
Oregon to beat Alabama by 10; maybe more.
...I’ll go with more...
If you believe that the tOSU/PSU game was fairly officiated, I don’t really know what else to say other than it was not.
...sigh...I’m trying to be patient with you, but it’s hard...but do try to comprehend...
...I said nothing about the game being fairly officiated...it’s quite possible that OSU got favorable calls early in the game, just as teams have been getting favorable calls throughout the entire history of football...
...my comments point more to the fact that you seem to think that your football team is so fragile, and so inept, that an interception in the first quarter at the 40 yard line automatically counts as 7 points against them, and that a phantom 3 points in the first half of a game causes an insurmountable mountain to climb in the 30 minutes of the game to follow...
...I am illustrating to you the loser mentality that wallows in self pity (see the post that complains about two decades of biased reffing, though you probably agree with it), and how childish it is...plus, as I said it demeans the actual prowess of your team, as you imply that minus ‘completely fair and unbiased officiating’ your team can’t possibly win...
...but, as I said before, do carry on if it makes you feel good about yourself...after all, ‘tis the season’ and all that sort of thing...
I don’t see a loser mentality, just simply a plea for games to be played on a level playing field. That’s all.
If whatever replaces the ncaa would simply just employ a nationwide pool of officials for ALL games, we could get away from this old boy network of conference officiating crews influencing the outcomes of games in an effort to bring additional profits to the conference.
I dont see a loser mentality, just simply a plea for games to be played on a level playing field.
...including any favorable calls that go PSU’s way, right...?
we could get away from this old boy network of conference officiating crews influencing the outcomes of games in an effort to bring additional profits to the conference.
...sure...the conference discriminates against one of its richest members in order to maximize profits...okay...
Not surprised an 0-state fan who’s benefited from their generosity would feel that way. We don’t need your conference. We never did. We joined it to improve the basketball program. It didn’t. Time to go somewhere else.
Not surprised an 0-state fan
...Fred, your posts never fail to amuse me, and for that I am deeply grateful...an OSU fan...? Moi...? not in a million years...
whos benefited from their generosity would feel that way.
...yes, of course, all those victories OSU has over PSU, and the many more that are to come, are all as a result of referee largesse...couldn’t possibly have anything to do with superior talent and a better overall program...you’re a true blue Nitter, Fred, from conspiracy-filled head to toe...
Time to go somewhere else.
...what good would that do, Fred...? Any other place the refs and everybody would be out to get you too, right...? I mean, since everybody hates you, where are you going to go...? Though I did hear the other day the Sun Belt might take you, subject to certain stipulations...
