Somewhere, Jerry Jones got the idea anyone else could do just as good during their clash of egos. He brought in Barry Switzer to take them to their 3rd and final Super Bowl, while the team slid into mediocrity for the next several seasons.
Oh yeah. I know that story. But there was more to it. Jimmy didn’t have to deal with true free agency. Switzer easily could have won 2-3 more Super Bowls but simultaneously the Cowboys lost a star pass rusher (Hayley), star TE (Novacek), their #2 WR (who wasn’t replaced really till last year, their superstar CB . . . All this left Jerry thinking he was just “one player away” when in fact they had lost 5-6 critical pieces.
