Huge bid for Jim Harbaugh should boost confidence at Michigan - even if it fails

Offering nearly $50 million for a football coach seems preposterous.

The question Michigan must be asking, though, is this: "What's the cost of not making that kind of offer?"

The reports Wednesday night that Jim Harbaugh's old school is dangling $48 million over six years for Captain Comeback to come back probably wasn't greeted with shock for Maize and Blue fans as much as relief. Harbaugh is the only hire that could immediately unify a fractious fan base and restore faith in a maligned athletic department. Yes, Harbaugh would be paid more than any other coach in college football, but that only reinforces the belief among Michigan fans that the Big House has to be Big again. Backing up the Brinks for Harbaugh is that kind of Big.

Michigan needs a Dickensian miracle. The ghost of Schembechler needs to pay Harbuagh a Christmas Eve visit and say to him "Jimmy come home. Save Michigan's soul".

The Atlanta Falcons should hire him. They need a new coach.

Would he leave SF?

Supposedly he does get along with the SF general manager.

Well, if SF lets him go at the end of the season, as is predicted, he has to go, UNLESS Oakland woos him from across the bay.

Scuttlebutt has it that the Raiders, Bears, and the University of Michigan want him.

Oh for the days of boola boola, raccoon coats, and straw boaters. The game was played then for honor, pride, and winning one for the Gipper. But I digress.

Harbaugh has been successful in every coaching job he has had. He was coached by Bo Schembechler at Michigan and was a very successful QB when he played there.

Harbaugh should return to Michigan. They will love him in Ann Arbor he can stay for the rest of his career.

The University of Michigan made huge mistakes almost every year in their athletic program since the late 1990’s. The great tradition has been severely weakened.

They need Harbaugh to restore U of M to its former greatness.

It is sickening the proliferation of huge salaries to college football coaches.

The colleges’ Nobel Prize winning scientist scholars get a pittance comparatively.

The mission of the universities should be academic instruction and research, not football.

Yes, football makes a lot of money but it is all kept and spent within the athlete department.

What a joke!

If by SF, you mean the Bay area, he would rather not. (can you say Raiders?). Not having to move from where he lived to coach Stanford was one huge reason he chose the 49ers among several offers.

If you mean the team, that’s already a done deal.

I hate to quibble, but the Nobel Prize is more corrupt than anything in college sports. In fact, of all the stuff big education does, sports is less corrupt than almost any other facet, including the tenure system and their cronyism with government. And since the money for football stays in the athletic department, they will pay the coach OUT of that very same money.

Not saying that college football isn't corrupt, just that it's not as corrupt as some institutions you apparently revere.

Harbaugh is VERY competitive.
His brother won a Superbowl.
Pete Carroll, who he hates, won a National Championship (vacated) AND a Superbowl.

He may come to Michigan but he wont stay.

The first interview question should be --

1) Can you handle losing to Ohio State every year?

$48 million?

But there will be hell to pay if one of the kids on the team accepts a free meal.

“But there will be hell to pay if one of the kids on the team accepts a free meal.”

How about this extremely serious violation: “Report: Oklahoma self-reports excessive pasta violation.”

“Violation: Three current student-athletes received food in excess of NCAA regulation at a graduation banquet. The three had graduated from the school but returned for an additional season of competition. The players were provided pasta in excess of the permissible amount allowed. Resolution: The three were required to donate $3.83 each (the cost of the pasta serving) to a charity of their choice in order to be reinstated. The department provided rules education to applicable athletics department staff members.” Evidently, the three violators were caught taking a second serving.

Harbaugh would be an effective recruiter, which is really the key to being a successful college coach.
He’s also well liked in Indiana from his time as qb with the Colts.

Michigan can do this because there are a LOT of very rich alumni of that university that are willing to put up the cash to pay for Jim Harbaugh to become Michigan's new head coach.
